Slap some Flex Tape over the JB Weld, should be good to go.

Oh it's fresh as hell... Turning it around and parking it in the garage and it leaks a 3" puddle.

I posted on the samba to see if they had any opinions. I might just sand it and add to the jb weld puddle if it's junk. This motor is bored and technical internal stuff so can't swap stuff over to a stock one.

I do have the stock engine that came out of it that was running when this one went in.

I doubt any amount of JB weld will hold long term with the expansion and contraction.
Chip that shit off and see what's underneath. I have a can of leftover Flex Seal you're welcome to try.

It's prolly cracked in the case right up under the cylinder as well. if so, it's fubar.
waiting to see pics of what they tried to cover up.

Yeah, i am going to pull the plugs and turn it over and see if i can see where it's coming from. It was built 50k ago by some great vw engine builder in Denver...custom for what the PO wanted but some different build. First two blew up in under 100 miles (covered by builder). Guessing builder was over spending money haha. PO said he tried to see where it was leaking from and knew it was up in there but never pulled the engine to look.

Chipped away a bit... Looks like it might've been hit with some sort of milling machine when it was getting built?

There are the gouges in the face although i don't see any path for oil under the stuff on the top. The stuff on the face was loose from oil being under it which makes me lean towards head gasket.

Upon further archaeological inspection... It looks like there is a hairline crack from that 90 degree corner up and to the right at a 45 degree angle. (To the right of the front nut in that corner, pretty hard to see on the phone). That appears to be right next to the main oil channel into the cooler.

So I'll probably try and clean it up, sand it, clean it a few more times and hit it with liquid steel. If itll hold for another 50k, I'll be fine. Even 5k!

So.. Apparently that crack would be from someone over tightening that oil cooler nut and is somewhat common.

Dilemma I'm at is... (I wont replace the case which has been bored, etc)

Sand it where the crack is and reapply a jb weld or liquid metal.

Or remove oil cooler to try and jb weld inside the channel it's leaking from as well.

Biggest worry i have with second option of pulling it (i already was easily able to break that nut free) is how well the gasket is on there. If i have to start prying on the oil cooler assembly above it, i fear that it'll stress the crack further and make it spread, get bigger or break off...Then I'll be 100% fucked as far as this case goes.

I can't do anything tonight as it's dark and getting cold...but leaning toward trying it as it sits and see how it works.

But i figure I'll sand the hell out of the area, brake cleaner to make sure it's clean and give it a shot. Put it back in and start it.. Well after the full cure time.

    Oh yeah...
Paint looks better the darker it gets outside.

    Awaiting topo stripes.

Just drove 119 between Rollinsville and Central City today and there's still quite a bit along the road up there. We also drove in to Yankee Hill and there's still a bit to see probably for about another week

I think they were magnesium from the factory? And you can buy new aftermarket aluminum or better magnesium cases.

Remember what the discount was? Lift or rack can’t do both at the same time. Love a good sale though.

@thefatkid I gave @YamaDirtrider your pump. He said he’ll most likely meet up with you within the next few weeks. Just saves me time that I can put towards working on the truck right now. Thanks again.

Cold morning. It was down to 61° in the house. Fired up the heater for the first time this season. Love hot water heat. :pccoffee:

It's in the 20s outside and since waking up in the 30s was nipply the last couple mornings, i used the heater for the first time. Kept it above 43... :D

The vw enthusiasts at thesamba say i shouldn't try to jb weld the case again and either take a chance with someone reputable whip can weeks the magnesium or get a new case...but I'm going to give it a try. If it leaks, then I'll go through the stock one and throw that back in. :fingerscrossed:
