The math did add up better, if not completely, to start with. Like I said, it's been sabotaged since inception, before what was passed did so. And that's... not how a Ponzi scheme works. I believe the attack you want is Communism/Socialism or wealth redistribution. :p

Catastrophic plans don't count anyway. Cost depends on the person and where you live. My insurance, and I'm not covered by an employer, is around $400 a month - and that's without any tax credits or assistance or whatever. I'm not saying that's cheap or that it's great coverage though it is 'full'.

The point of the penalty is to get everyone to pay in at some level. The amount of penalty is what the insurance would cost you anyway, at least based on average cost of a certain level plan across the US. There are definitely still people out there for whom the penalty is cheaper than insurance, even now. The small percentage fund the rest is kinda bs though. The problem is actually opposite - most people are healthy and don't need it so they don't want to pay, so costs are higher for those who do. If everyone contributed a smaller amount, there's more to cover the costs. That's the basic concept of insurance as a business, to assemble a pool that pays in as much or more than people will need to take out. People who don't work are an entirely different story. They're not on insurance, they're on Medicaid or whatever local equivalent. Yes, that's still being paid for by everyone via taxes, but it's not the same as the insurance pool.

Denials of coverage and how insurance is run as a business is a whole other story. The healthcare system itself has its own set of issues (mostly, imo, related to so much of it being for profit and the levels those costs have reached). But the alternative is you go back to unregulated private insurance, you get denied for pre-existing conditions, they can jack up rates as much as they want. We continue down the path that insurance or even medical care is only available to the wealthy (and very poor) and the quality of care is also related to how much you can pay. You'll be even less likely to afford insurance than you are now, and the level of incident required to wipe you out will continue to lower.

I don't expect to change your or anyone else's mind. It just always amazes me at how much people get wrong about the system and how... selectively they seem to view it. And dammit here we (I) go again. I waffled on deleting this whole thing and saying fuck it so many times. It's probably not worth it, but whatever. :deadhorse:

I'm sure the math added up in the theory of what was planned, but we don't live in a world where theories come true all the time. Selling a bunch of people a shit sammich, and not everyone is going to blindly follow.

But yes, the main issue is the underlying insurance monster, just the same with the corporate greed machine and the country's laughable political system. All of which are seemingly too far corrupt and broken to be fixed in any orderly fashion.

I’m more referencing the fact that Old Brett will be wearing Patagonia urban gear and sipping on fancy coffee drinks soon.

Yup. We’re all paying that so that 100sB industry continues to make billions of dollars in profit.

My private health insurance is the shittiest of plans and is so expensive for me and my daughter. The premiums keep rising significantly every year so I ask the insurance company “why? Why is my exact plan going up by $70/mo when all I ever used was the two free annual exams?”

The only answer I got was, “because the cost of care is rising.”

Me, “your company’s 2017 net profit was $4 billion. Pretty sure your margins are still healthy. Speaking of healthy....shouldn’t I pay less considering I never use your insurance I’m paying for?”

If i ever needed a medical procedure that wasn't an emergency there's zero doubt that I'll take a vacation in any of the many countries who have superior service and equal skill to be able to pay out of pocket instead of having to declare bankruptcy. And no, i don't believe the fear mongering propaganda that is spread by the medical industry in this country to scare most people from doing it.
