Rented a cabin in Nikisi but will have a rental car. Looking for a guided trip, since our cabin is on a lake and supposedly comes with a canoe. There seems to be endless options, so if someone had an experience worth sharing would like to hear about it. Thanks!

Went halibut fishing in Homer about 10 years ago with my brother. He found a local charter boat some guy ran out of his house. It was nice, just the boat captain, two of his friends from Kenai and us. Not one of those massive charters. We each shipped back about 80 lbs of halibut. For the life of me, I can’t remember the guys name, plus he was an old dude, so might not be around anymore. Regardless, it was a blast of a trip. Sorry about the crappy pic...photo of a photo.5793B0EE-CEF1-46E5-9F6A-5EF00D5F3D1A.jpg

Isn't that pretty much the main reason to go fishing?

:notsure: Yeah pretty much. It was a charter that takes you out to fish for halibut in the Cook Inlet. We caught other stuff throughout the day like cod and skates (devil rays), but threw them back because we had halibut specific licenses. I’m sure we could have gotten a different license, but yeah, we went to Homer to specifically fish halibut.

It’s actually a lot of work. They’re bottom feeders, so their mouth is on the bottom of their bodies. You drop your baited hook to the ocean floor until they bite. Then you reel their heavy ass, dead weight bodies off the bottom of the ocean. They fight a bit, but not as much as I expected. The skates were worse. It’s like dragging a 100 lb kite off the ocean floor. Come out at the end of the day looking like Popeye :muscleflexing:

As we were driving down from Anchorage to Homer we went over the Kenai River and this is what we saw...63155E69-F356-42C4-9B86-82EDB61A7666.jpg
Not my photo, but you get the idea. Not interested in anything like this...looks miserable!

Again, it was a great trip @barcelona7568 I personally would look into the smaller charters if you want to halibut fish in Homer. The big charter boat decks looked similar to the pic above, shoulder to shoulder people all fishing the same spot. Being as I’m not a huge people person, I probably would have thrown some people overboard.

Yup, it’s called “combat fishing” for a reason :D
Grew up in Fairbanks, we generally avoided all that nonsense by going down to Valdez for their salmon runs.

Wouldn't have it any other way. It's a requirement we talk shit about each other's branches.

Which since I've been out I'm happy to shoot the shit with any vet since all of them will get it to some extent more than any civilian would.
