It's a Chevy/ford/Dodge type of debate... Haters gonna hate.

    It's actually a Chevy/Ford/Dodge/Yugo debate.

Dang... I didn't realize BillieGoats could strip the wheels so fast...

Or was Stig so pissed (or forlorn) that he tossed a roadflare in the cab? Or... he thought he was lighting a cigar... and it was a roadflare instead?

Is running a winch off a portable winch tray that can be plugged in a front or rear receiver hitch a viable option? Or is that just stigly?

Doable but need to do the calculations on what wire size to use

Is there merit in the idea... or when it comes to front bumper time, should I just cave in and get a front winch like everyone else?

Part of my thinking, in addition to winch flexibility (front, back, possibly even block & tackled to trees or other "structures"), was for 99% of the time when running around town... leave it at home and save the 50+lb of weight on the front.

But if it's a futile idea...

Just get 2 more snatchblocks and you can winch yourself backwards from the front.

That was the same thought process I had. But after 3 wheeling trips putting 100lbs in and out of the bed, I gave up and installed it in the front.
Block and tackles are great but it’s not what you want to rely on. The truck is ~4K lbs? And stuck in snow/mud/ on a rock it cound easly make the roling weight 8-10k lbs.

My 8500lbs winch was not happy to pull a 2door jeep up the snowy embankment

I’m thinking about installing a rear winch

What is the minimum recommended winch size for our Tacos? 8500lb?

How much does one way with synthetic line?

Warn? Smittybuilt? Any others? Are they all more or less equivalent (Ford vs Chevy vs Yugo, again?) Any brand winches to avoid?

Rule of thumb was 1.5x the vehicle weight.
Synthetic defiantly cuts down on the weight. But it needs to be protected more from rocks and sunlight

Pick a brand. I running superwinch and been fine. Another I’ve heard uses the 12k harbor freight and is fine. Come up is supposed to be a high quality brand but idk anyone that has it.

It’s more about waterproof and size of battery wire to feed the motor

That burned out hulk of a Taco in the snow by the trail on the previous page... was that Stig's rig, once upon a time? What started the fire?

Yep. That's where I'm at... My OME suspension has been more than good enough to me and currently has ... checks OCD spreadsheet ... 25,972 miles on it. I think I may do a supercharger or sliders/winch first before going to the next step up in suspension, but when I do, it will be coilovers and relocated rear shocks.
