Meh? I’ve had both. Had a 16 T4R Trail Premium and now the 18 Taco. 4Runner was definitely nice, but felt too car-like. Despite the funkiness of the Tacoma drivetrain, even in manual, I prefer my Taco over the 4Runner. Opinion only, obviously.
Edit: My 67 yr old mom has that exact same model T4R...

Not sure what your budget is but I wished that I had foregone the add-a leafs initially and went straight to a new leaf pack. There are a lot of threads that you can search for comparing Dakars, All-Pros, Deavers, etc out there. I went with a Grand Junction outfit:

    https://www.alcanspring.com/

They actually build custom springs for your exact needs or weird fetishes. Mine were about $650 shipped.

I'd pass on the add a leaf - just go to OME EL095R (mid load) or EL096R (Heavy load). If you get the heavy load you can remove a leaf to reduce lift/capacity = good idea. @Toytec Lifts will have what you want and provides discount to TW members.

Hey @Squeaky Penguin or anyone else in Steamboat know who can weld on rock sliders up here? My buddy called the off-road shop who said ‘they’ve heard of nerf bars but not not sliders’ and ‘it’s a terrible ideas to weld something onto your frame’...

I think so as well. Trailer will hold anything and more than the gx will tow, perfect for other toys. Slide in ramps...all the fun.

I'll do it if you're OK will less-than-perfect welds and don't mind waiting a month until I wrap up my own truck projects.

Which offroad shop did he call? Assuming high-country, that would explain the answer. I would try calling creepshow offroad, or any of the local welders like Native Son or All Forms Fab.
