Re: high passes in the SW
This from the Silverton Chamber today.

Yesterday June 20th, 2019 San Juan County coordinated a conference call with Hinsdale County, San Miguel County and Ouray County leadership and road crews in which I attend as Public Information Officer. All four counties anticipate continuing this process at least quarterly or biannually.

Here is the UPDATE from the meeting Thursday June 20th, 2019 for backcountry status:
    Backcountry Roads OPEN:
Top of Stoney Pass (County crew working down to Pole Creek but Pole Creek is HIGH Water and unpassable)
Top of Hurricane Pass (Crew working on coming down California towards Animas Forks)
*Best case scenario is California open to Animas Forks in a couple more weeks)
Top of Corkscrew Pass (Ouray County working on their portion still)
Top of Ophir Pass (San Miguel County working from our side down towards Ophir – they will be a couple more weeks min)
Cunningham is Open to the Pride of the West
South Mineral open to the last campground (paid camping sites are closed as of now due to river levels per SJNF)
*Dispersed camping allowed in South Mineral
Animas Forks road clear from Eureka to Grouse Gulch only
Velocity Basin road clear just short of the top
Clear Lake road clear to timberline
Ice Lakes has lots of downed trees on trail and snow fields (CAUTION & snow gear are recommended)
*Lower lake still under snow and upper lake inaccessible at this time
Kendall Mountain road work will begin shortly but travel at own risk and avoid avalanche debris
Minnie and Maggie are both open half way up and travel at own risk and avoid avalanche debris
Black Bear is least of the priorities and is expected to be late July/early August before passable.

San Juan County Crews hope to start chipping away at Cinnamon Pass around the 4th of July and Hinsdale County is 1 ½ away from top of Cinnamon and Engineer but they are seeing enormous avalanches and debris and it will take many more weeks. Ouray County crews are working on Corkscrew and Engineer from their side but no concrete estimate given at this time. It all depends on resources and mother nature/temperatures for all county crews. Hinsdale did receive extra plowing resources due to their Disaster declaration and that contract was just extending to June 26th.

Please be cautious of Avalanche debris, high river waters, snow bridges and rapidly changing weather. If recreating in the backcountry be prepared for sun, snow or rain at any given moment. And we always ask users to Stay on the trail, pick up extra litter, view but stay away from wildlife and be a courteous, conscientious steward of our backcountry.

I have attached a JPEG version of this update for your social media channels.

    Thank you,

When I was a kid, the neighbors fed squirrels. They ate the fruit off our peach and plum trees so we shot them. Neighbors got upset because we were shooting them and called animal control. Animal control came out, said there was nothing wrong with what we were doing but the neighbors were upset so they gave us some live traps.
Those live traps were the best thing ever!
If you missed with the first shot, they weren't going anywhere so you could take as many shots as you needed. :D

A friend of mines Chevy Colorado with 10k miles was towing a 2100# camp trailer on a dirt road and hit a bump. This is the result. GM sent out an “investigator” 6 weeks later and has denied any warranty claims. They state the “the truck has 1” taller tires as the first reason. The second reason is the trailer is 2100 pounds, in the owners manual it states that trailers over 2k pound should have brakes. (Towing capacity listed as 5k) Since hit trailer is 100 pounds overweight and doesn’t have brakes that’s what the frame bent. No other damage to truck.
GM’s investigator took trailer to a certified CAT scale. Trailer is 2100lbs. Tongue weight is 347lbs.
Think twice about that Colorado purchase if you actually use your truck as a truck.

The truth came out on this one. He was traveling too fast while hitting a whoop with the trailer hooked up as well. There are other pics out there that show his trailer and you can see the trailer's axle is bent pretty bad from the whoop.

According to the Chevy Service manage "that is normal." They went to service manager school with the Toyota service manager when learning how to answer customers with a wtf look on their face. Oh Happy Day!

Has anyone been out I-70 way towards Leadville? I was gonna head out that way but if the roads are slick I don’t want to drive out that far for a trail.

Did some reading on filtered valve stem cores. I went with internal balancing media from CounterAct for my 255/85R16s on steel wheels with rock rings, and installed their valve cores with a "filter" of sorts on the end. The stems I used are high pressure (brass body) and 1.25" in length, which should not have been a problem for their filter. Regardless, airing down and up every trip thus far results in the media sticking a core (or three) open after you let the air out. One finally broke... this one never worked right from the get-go. I think it was damaged up front. The filter broke off and the metal end of the core was bent badly; it took needle nose pliers to pull it out after unthreading). The filter was stuck inside the stem and in an effort to shove it back into the tire (just to get it clear of the stem so I could install a standard core (which I carry on the trail) and air up) it bit into the tool I was using and I managed to remove it.

In researching other filtered cores, the ones I could find require a 1.5" minimum straight length, and get poor reviews. Seems the only real solution is to go back to standard valve cores. If I lose a few beads during airing up and down (and having to remove, clear, and reinstall the core), it won't be a problem. I took the overkill route and put in more media than was needed.

    What a pain.

Looks like sunny and dry pavement to me. Now, the trails and particularly at higher elevation are probably a different story.
