One of my co-workers has to spend a Metric buttload on his drainage system for something very similar (rainwater/hail). Only saving grace for him is his wife works for Bryan Construction and can use whatever equipment not in use.

I have a steep driveway (7%), but if I ever start getting nervous about flooding, I’m looking for an Ark and Evan Almighty.

It's 2019. The world will both end soon AND in the meantime things will get worse. Plan for the 1,000 year event.

Wow. I guess the Utilities is held to a different standard. That shit would never fly for us. Many 16-18 hour shifts to ensure it was done right.

The Rockrimmon area is a shit show. Old coal mines with homes built on top of them, with low water tables. Sounds like a great idea right?

Yep. That would be one solid example of what can happen though that was likely more of moisture issue than contractor negligence. CDOT projects are actually pretty well structured on the QC side. I could go into it a bit more but Ill spare you all, but if you grade a biology exam with an answer key to a chemistry test, things can appear to be correct when they really are not.

Yeah, IIRC we'd had a couple dry years around when they did the construction, then this year has been very wet. And I wouldn't mind hearing more educated speculation, but that's me.

Holy jeez does the truck drive better with poly rack bushings. Until mine started clunking I had never noticed how much play they had in them.

Dry weather conditions shouldnt play a role but they certainly do make things much more difficult.

That video talked about "fat clays" which are definitely not the preferred material for being underneath a road but even still if they are put in properly can be suitable. What the video didnt talk about is that the greater Denver area has soils, that are not necessarily unique to this area but are definitely exaggerated here more so than just about anywhere else in the country, that experience tremendous volume changes. They swell and contract at pretty surprising levels (swell of 15-20% is not uncommon) and those volume changes are definitely moisture induced. If clay is placed at the proper water content (and protected from moisture loss/gain) than it can last forever. But, if it is not, it can fail very very quickly. This happens because clay isnt porous like a sand so when water is introduced to the material there is no room in between the particles for it to sit so they have to separate to make room for it which causes stability issues. Now if the clay is placed too wet and then is allowed to dry out it will shrink/consolidate which is why you get all these dips in the road that we are blessed with out here. The "proper" water content is the tough part and thats where I was going earlier with the reference to grading the biology exam with an answer key to a chemistry test.

Sadly, that pretty much sums up a lot of contractors knowledge as well.
