I had some orphaned baby skunks under the front porch on my property a few years ago. Someone probably killed the momma with a pistol. Or maybe a shotgun. Had to be a shovel. Because skunks are terrifying. ;)
I put plywood at the fence so they couldn’t get in the back yard and have problems with the dogs. I was relieved to get that done. I turned around to go back inside and Jasper dog is nose-to-nose with baby skunk.

I got it to go back under the fence then called a humane wildlife rescue group. A guy came out and took the three babies away to be relocated. Life goes on.

Skunks and raccoons I tell ya. They just. don't. die.

I also now know to call @teamhypoxia 's pest control service if I ever need an excuse to justify routing new fiber cable to my house.

I've learned that shovels are a woefully inadequate means of dispatching wildlife. I did manage to end a mouse with one once.
Many years ago in wyoming, we ran over a badger on a two track trail to the oil fields. A kid in the truck insisted that we stop. I think he was worried that we had injured and not killed the badger. He heads back the way we came with a shovel. I can see him in the mirror with the shovel raised clear over his head. About 2 seconds after that shovel came down, the kid is shrieking and sprinting for the truck. One seriously pissed off badger is hot on his heels.
We, of course, goosed the truck just enough to make it hard for him to catch up until he finally dove into the bed of the truck.
So yeah, if you ever need to kill a critter bring something other than a shovel.

When I wiped my wipers this afternoon leaving work, I could’ve sworn there was a layer of brown in it. I just figured it was the bottom layer but it sure didn’t look like it.

Armadillos are the same. Seen one digging a hole and take 3 12guage shotgun shells to the ass and was still digging away

Our dog tangled with a skunk a couple years ago. He was scratching at the door and jetted in before I could stop him. I'd bet it was 6 months before the smell left the house.

Plow just pushed thru the neighborhood. The time I spent clearing the snow from around the van was a complete waste of time. He put it back.

There is one exception to this: Snakes. Nothing kills snakes better than a shovel. Used live with a guy who we said "could shit a shovel" because any time a snake appeared, whether we were grilling, working on the house, camping, building a hunting blind, etc. this guy had a shovel ready for it.

Why is everyone so afraid of snakes? Most of them aren't going to bother you and if they do, it's likely because you're bugging them or getting in their space.

I'm pretty sure I was scarred from the original Aladdin when Jaffar turned into the snake, had nightmares as a kid from that. I don't think I had ever seen a snake until I came to the states. More importantly, it's in the bible, snakes = the devil! Death to them all! St Patrick, we need you!

    We got those too.
I've decided I like them a lot better than skunks.

Grew up with horses and cattle. Spent many a day hunting rattle snakes with shovels. Just kinda carried over for other snakes
