Are we going to mention the potential need for an ice axe and the knowledge on how to self arrest?

    Or wet slide avalanche risk?

Something like Quandary, assuming there’s not a ton of recent snow, will have a pretty well-packed trail. If there’s a decent freeze (clear skies and cool temps) the night before, and you’re in decent shape and moving at a decent pace, you can get up and down before the packed trail starts softening up too much. In these conditions, microspikes are a MUST - it’s real easy for a slip to turn in to a sliding fall. Poles are nice in these conditions as well. Bierstadt will be similar, except trying to come back through the willows without snowshoes will make you regret every decision that you’ve ever made that brought you to that point. Elbert will have less of a packed trail, so snowshoes would be more of a necessity. Currently, access to Lincoln is closed due to a private property dispute:

I’ll second the recommendation for MSR, and would say that you’ll definitely want something with a riser bar on the back, really helps when going up hills. That said, slowshoes suck, skis are better :D

On the standard routes on those mentioned, I wouldn’t really expect to see wet slides on the trail. As far as the ice axe, unless you’re well practiced with it, I consider them more of a liability than a benefit.

I know to check the avalanche report the day of. I'm trying to take some time to educate myself because I'm becoming aware that spring hiking in these areas can be pretty dangerous.

I will be with 3 others, one of whom is a ED physician with survival skills. So at least I won't be alone.

    Be prepared for:

COLD - it will be cold above 12K
PACKED - those are the general 14ers (and Beirstadt) that if anyone has ever done a 14er, those er them.
SNOW - there will most likely still be snow up there. Poles are a good idea just in case
MUD - depending on how much sun they get between now and then

HAVE FUN!! Be off the mountain by 2 is a general rule - t-storms and lightening. I don't personally pay a lot of attention to this, but most other people do. It also tend to rain in that area around 1-4 pm every day in the spring.

Denver sucks and it's the influx of outsiders who have ruined it. Why did you move here if all you wanted was to bring what you left here? Go home.
