Well I can tell you this. When I test drove a SR5 before buying one I did a brake stand and it left 2 nice tire Mark's in the lot. I know my window sticker says Limited slip. Not sure of the mechanics .

Jack the rear of your truck up. Spin one tire, they will spin in opposite directions == open diff, if they were to spin in the same direction that would be an LSD.

Your window sticker says "automatic limited slip differential", which is not a mechanical LSD. Its still an open diff with brake assistance.

I think the whole “auto LSD” thing is misleading to us old guys. I think of it as a form of electronic traction control, with brake assist rather than just throttle cutoff, but on the other hand the net result is similar to a mechanical (clutch, sprag) LSD. So in that sense the SR5 does have LSD. But then I guess many cars do now.

Its pretty slimy marketing imo. Its also much worse as far as function compared to a true LSD, but requires much less maintenance then a mechanical LSD. Jeep calls theirs a BLD, which is far more accurate in what it is.

So when replacing diff oil does this mean no lsd friction additive is needed or oil specified for lsd?

When I bought my '17 MT OR I was shopping for something used. But when I realized I could by a new one for just a little more $$ it was a no brainer. $34,008 out the door.

Keep the Chevy until the warranty is up. If the issues are ironed out, keep it, if not, trade it in.

I have my TRD OffRoad 4X4 since 7 miles on the truck since 2017 March. Now the truck is 32,000 miles and have visited multiple trips to Grand Canyon N. Rim, Joshua Tree, San Diego, Lassen Volcanic national park, Yosemite multiple times. Truck has zero issue and only regular 87 Gas, regular oil change in every 5k. Quote from Toyota US CEO said today, :Lineup Will Always Have Bias Toward Cars", about how they looks, how to drive, how they perform on windy roads. But at the end I think the ultimate goal to own any vehicle is to have zero issue. I think this is the majority in here why to own a Toyota instead of other brands. And you have to enjoy the truck that you drive every single day.

I do recommend you to consider the 4WD TRD Sport if you are a weekend warrior like me. In California we do not have such beautiful mountain to crawl, river to cross like in Oregon, Colorado, Montana or Utah...etc. so I think my TRD Offroad is a bit overkill in CA. I think the TRD Sport has the nice scoop sitting on the hood, and most of the TRD Offroad, Limited owners are still looking for that scoop. (Yes sounds silly but I'm also one of them on the same boat) Hence with the 4WD capability and nicer looking front, I would suggest to consider the TRD Sport 4WD.

Good luck and welcome to the Forum.

We bought a 17 TRD Sport after having an 05 TRD Sport for 6 years.. The 3rd gen is over a year and hasn't needed anything other than it's first oil change. It's been great - just like the old one but better.

ps, I keep reading the thread title as Corrado owner thinking about switching and I'm like, 'yeah no duh..'

Bought my new 3rd gen in October... debated between new GMC Canyon Denali and Tocoma Limited (daily driver with some weekend easy OR adventure and camping). You definitely are well advised to do an extended test drive... you will experience an immediate drive & ride difference between the two, however the Tacoma style will come around after a few days.

IMHO, the GMC is a much smoother drive and more comfortable fit than the Tacoma... and the GMC is as close to a “luxury” midsize truck as one can get, however NOT deserving of the Denali badging. Both vehicles have their pros and cons, and neither really out doing the other in totality. In the end, I settled for a Limited 2018 Tacoma... and not regretting the purchase, but not ecstatic about it either.

The standard safety and technology features available in the Tacoma (not even available in the GM variants), a few thousand dollars less MSRP, and a potential higher resale return, were the factors that pushed me pass the better drive and fit comfort of the GMC...

I’ve never seen a Tacoma with a scope on the hood. However I’ve seen lots of scoops.

I owned a '15 Colorado Z71 extended cab 4X4. I traded it for the Tacoma because the tranny in the Colorado was terrible, to the point of being dangerous.
You will see similar posts about the automatic in the Tacoma. Manufacturers are trying to get cute with the transmission programming in order to save tiny amounts of fuel, but it's having a negative effect on driveability.

    • The Colorado was more comfortable and spacious than my Tacoma, but the seats were still pretty uncomfortable for me.
    • The Colorado was a LOT quieter inside.
    • The Colorado had friggin' stake pockets in the bed, so I could use a proper ladder rack. The lack of those in the Tacoma still pisses me off, and it appears that Ford has left them out of the new Ranger as well.
    • I miss those little rear bumper steps that the Colorado had. Such a small thing that makes a big difference.
    • I was able to get the Tacoma with a manual transmission, which avoids 99% of the driveability issues.
    • The Tacoma will have much better resale value than the Colorado.
    • There seems to be a lot more aftermarket support for the Tacoma (if you want to mod the truck).
If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time, they both use direct injection, but the Tacoma also uses port injection to help clean the valves.
Direct injection will leave major deposits on the valves over time, which means money spent on getting them properly cleaned. I installed a catch can
on the Colorado and you wouldn't believe the amount of oil it trapped.

I'm perfectly happy with my 2016 SR5 V6 4x4 SB. Does it get great mileage? Not really. Does it accelerate well? Not really. Does it have some faults? Yup just like every other vehicle I have owned over the past 40 years. Mine most likely sees more mud & dirt than a vast majority of owners will ever use theirs in which is why I bought it. Does it do what I need? Absolutely. Would I trade it? Once the new JT get sorted out perhaps, but that's a couple years out.

2016 GMC Canyon SLT w/ LineX and....
Late to the party....LOL I've been a Tacoma owner for many years. Most recent, was 2007 TRD Sport. Traded that in for a 2016 Canyon SLT.
All of which- are great trucks. I've had my Canyon for coming up on 3 years now and I really can't complain. My dealership has been great in taking care of things.
    Why did I switch?
Much more options available and updated mechanicals - to name a few: Power seats, black leather interior, remote start, Apple Carplay, Auto4WD, rear disc brakes.
About the only thing I can think of that the Tacoma had that the Canyon didn't - was homelink and a sunroof.
I test drove both. The 2016 Tacoma had the exact same 'ride & feel' as my 2007 did (after the frame was replaced).
The Canyon feels 'heavier' 'more stable'. The roof is more insulated - you don't hear the loud raindrops on the roof like the tacoma did.
Let's not forget to mention - Diesel options and ZR2 (I had to say it...lol).

Like most manufacturers - they're not perfect. The major issue I've had with mine - is what they (enthusiasts) call ..."chuggle stutter" issue.
When I bought the truck - it would upshift too soon (going 40mph). When you coast and get down to 35mph (or so), put your foot on the gas....it would stutter & hiccup like it didn't know how to downshift. Throttle response was lacking also - if I stepped on the gas 'a little', it wouldn't go ' a little'. Using 89 Octane gas and the Pedal commander helped especially with throttle response. Over a period of 2.5 years - the dealership would flash updates to various transmission programming. Those only helped temporarily. Things got worse this past year...... the stutter stopped, and the throttle response got much worse. Two months ago - it was 'bad enough' for the dealership to determine I needed a new torque converter. Since they've changed the torque converter, throttle response is much better. Only from time to time - it'll hesitate but its brief and recovers quickly (this might actually be a symptom of 'throttle by wire' and not the tranny/torque converter).

I personally can't complain (knock on wood). My 3/36 is out in Feb. I'll be shopping around for an extended warranty. I'm not sure if I'll buy one or not -pending price. I'm not too concerned about resale value. Nobody knows what the resale value will be after 5,8,10 years yet. These trucks have a good enough reputation now that they'll be comparable to the Tacoma. We'll see how the reliability goes..... When it comes time to buy a new truck again - I'll shop around. I'm certainly not stuck to any one manufacturer anymore. Toyota has competition now....I hope they step UP their game - cuz they're gonna have to.

Be aware that the issues you have with your Colorado are also present in some Tacoma’s. If it was me, I would just keep it.
