DOT compliant just means they were built to DOT specification. SAE J2530 is what DOT follows as the industry standard and being that traditional beadlocks do not comply with SAE J2530 DOT wo t officially approve them.

 

Problem is lots of aftermarket wheels will have a DOT stamp on them but actually doesn't mean a thing, kinda like my skid lid for when I ride through states that require a helmet. It has a DOT sticker under the clear coat but you can flex as easy as an old vinyl record. To see it the DOT stamp is legit you can call the department of transportation to verify or claim ignorance like I do with my helmet.

 

Basically their not not illegal (not a typo) just in that grey area where you can be ticketed and can be a hassle if a cop wants to really be a pain. Even the military doesn't use ring beadlock style wheels they use a center lock so when they have a tire failure the tire still can't come off the wheel.

 

You are correct in me making a blanket statement, non complaint with SAE would have been more appropriate which is where DOT draws their info from. The main point it I was trying to make for the original post is that manufacturers wont put a true beadlock on a production vehicle due to the legal repercussions from not using SAE approved products. As for the legality of putting a DOT stamps on non DOT products is not in question, part of my job was investigation fraudulent DOT stamps (millions coming out of China every year with high pressure vessels (4500psi) accounting for almost 17% of products with fraudulent DOT stamps.
