I thought TacomaBeast owned up to stuff he has done, including community service. Unlike most everyone else caught doing stuff like this. He’s not my cup of tea, but owning up to shit in this day in age has to count for something.

I wasn't even Mateo, it was his videographer. But he did take the blame and pledged to raise $10,000 to towards an environmental non profit but not sure if he did or not. Like you though, not really my cup of tea either

Public shaming is not as effective as educating users.

 

I somewhat disagree since really nothing works to prevent it from continuing. You can educate all day but almost 99% of "educational encounters" ends up with the accused party in self defense mode thinking they did nothing wrong and getting pissy. So I say shame em. My solution though is heftier fines. Slap on the wrist does nothing.

What about for the users who refuse to be educated, e.g. someone who repeated does the same dumb shit regardless of being told not to.

Way too many people in this country think they either know everything, or that the rules do not apply to them.

 

This right here. The only time people understand fucking up is when it hits them right in the wallet.

 

When big brands do it and they have thousands of followers, it becomes okay for all the people watching.

 

Totally get what you’re saying here, but it’s pretty sad that there seems to be a huge lack of common sense and just simple care (giving a fuck?) being used by most of these people. Even if I saw some vendor doing this stuff, I’d still be able to apply some judgment and recognize that it’s bad behavior.

Seeing the sheeple that are following some of these tools just blindly going along with it as if it’s okay really erodes my faith in humanity. And it makes the entire hobby and industry that much easier to portray as one giant group of shitheads tearing up the land, which of course, we aren’t.

 

The bottom line is all government entities need to start fining people for improper use. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse but those with the power that be rarely levy a fine. BLM and USFS as well as the NPS are all seeing such an increase in use that it is a necessity to start imposing fines on those using these places without regard. All three are complaining of lack of funding but few are willing to enforce their own rules. Why are they unwilling to do this? The answer is it's easier to close the area than enforce. That is the end goal for them all I am beginning to believe, institute ticketed use to raise day use fees instead. Look at the popular parks and places like hanging lake....

 

Current fine for driving off the beaten path is a mere $100.00.
And nothing more.
I spend more than that in beer for the weekend camping.

It's high time Texans returning home complain about the time wasted being cited as well as a ticky tack fine instead of the tales of asshattery.


Maybe we need to reinstitute paying in person instead of it being able to sign the ticket and pay online. Drag that side x side back to town and charge a tow fee while they have to get a ride back to pay the ticket to get it out of an impound lot... Either way they are the ones that need to protect the land they have been entrusted to oversee.
