It only opened up a week or two ago, and could be snowed in any day now. Wouldn't suprise me if it's open less than a month this year.

This weekend might be peak for fall colors too.

i could be, gotta check w the lady to make sure we don't have plans.

we've hiked pearl pass, ski/skinned it, biked it, so the logical thing to do now would be to drive it. :notsure:

Looks like the hot springs were right below Castle, in the valley where the bear was. Also not familiar with "Peal Pass"

Don't know if this is touched on further down the thread but I was just up there and there are barricades right at the Hancock pass turn. I went around them but noped-out. If I had a good ATV I'd be all over it.

I wouldn't have if there weren't tracks. It was questionable there, but overall that's a good point. I know the local Jeep club is responsible for repairs so maybe some of them.

Nice video! How far up Antero does that 4wd trail take you? I've done 23 of the 14ers and wouldn't mind a shortcut up antero. I think that one is something like 13 - 15 miles round trip if you go on foot.

If you go all the way to the end/top, it's on the order of 700' below the summit give or take. The potential round trip distance varies considerably depending on if you start at treeline or somewhere else along the road.

Yep, we did it earlier this summer, an hour or so round trip hike to bag a 14er. You can see the trucks at the saddle.

I know this is kind of an older post, but whatevs. I was in Leadville around the same time you were, and ran Halfmoon a few days before you. I was just as surprised as you were to see Iron Mike. That obstacle is NO JOKE! Wish I had some pictures going up. But, here I am coming down. It was pretty wild.... very slippery. Honestly, the easier side of Halfmoon creek offered better views IMO.

Nice! Can you stop along the route and camp? I still want to feel like I earned the summit, but it would definitely be a radically different approach to a big mountain to take a 4wd part of the way and set up camp. :D

I really like that valley, I guess you are not supposed to go past the gate by the mill on the other side now, where the views are. Going all the way to the top where you can see back down to Independence pass is pretty damn cool though.

You can, there are a bunch of sites by the upper creek crossing and along the way up to treeline.

As Wishbone said, there are some places to camp below treeline, but that's still a fair distance rt to the summit. As in 16 miles from the 2wd trailhead, basically the start of the Antero road, and 7 miles from the treeline. There's another road that forks off as well. It's been a while since I was up there, but I don't recall seeing any place I'd want to camp above treeline. You go up a ways and then there's this broad, relatively flat saddle between Antero and White (something else to watch, make sure you're going up the right mountain), but it isn't terribly inviting. I think you can continue on over down to Brown's, but it's been a long while since I looked at that. There has also been a tremendous increase in prospecting activity on that mountain in the last decade or two, and you want to be careful about claims. Some of the people up there are nuts, very touchy, or armed (or all three).

Very true, we saw A LOT of mining/prospecting activity up there, even one person selling gems and whatnot right above the creek crossing.
