Colorado Trip With a ton of Pictures

We turned a 5 hour drive from Canon City, CO to Grand Junction, CO into a 3 day adventure!

We started off going North from Canon City to Cripple Creek via Shelf Road. We then drove to Alma and took Mosquito Pass to Leadville, where we ate dinner. It was raining, so we decided rather than camp to take Hagerman Pass to Basalt, where we got a hotel room.

The next day we drove up Aspen Mountain and Richmond Hill. Up until now everything thing had been a blast. But, then we came to Taylor Pass... I was in my tacoma with a 3" lift, but my father-in-law was in a stock extended cab Chevy Silverado... Before going on Taylor Pass we talked to two guys in ATVs. The first one (that I talked to) said he thought I could make it, but there was no way my father-in-law would... The second guy (that my father-in-law talked to) said that there were a couple tough spots, but he could make it... I asked him if he was really up for it, and he said "yes" (to my surprise). Well... You'll Just have to see the pictures...

wow.. thats one of my favorite things about colorado.. endless forest service roads to explore.. cant wait to move out there again. looks like an awesome trip. thanks for the pics

Thanks for sharing the pics, looks like everybody enjoyed the trip (especially the kids!) except for that little mishap w/ that big rock. But that's part of the fun. Can't wait to take my truck to CO and do some adventure trail.

 

Looks like Taylor pass was the only trail that really needed 4x4...is that assumption true?

 

No... The pictures don't do it justice, but I wouldn't try Mosquito Pass or Aspen Mountain, Richmond Hill without 4x4.

Yes! That is pretty much a dirt road... There were passenger cars riding on it also... Other than a few narrow places, it is not a bad road, and it is quite senic.
