Whats a decent brand to look for when shopping for a come along. What brands do you avoid like the plague? I'm still new to trucks and offroading so I've been researching and shopping like a fiend today.

Not exactly sure what direction to send you here. Could you give some background on your request? What's the expected use or purpose?

If you're looking for something that'll help you move your truck a few feet if you get stuck, go for a Hi-Lift jack with the off-road recovery pack. It's the most versatile tool imaginable and I never go wheeling without one. It can be used as a very manual winch, but what's better is it can be used to jack the truck up and is designed so it can be driven off of without getting damaged. Just make sure you have solid jacking points on your truck.

If you're looking for something more like a winch, this could turn into an expensive thread. :)

I don't know of any brands so to speak, I would try to buy at a reputable hardware store or a company strong in the lumber industry.

I recommend something with a sturdy/solid handle. The others will bend on you.

Agreed! I've used my Hi-Lift to get out of snow packed to the frame. Jacked up under the hitch mount, tipped the jack over, and pushed the rear end over 6ft so the wheels were on solid ground.

There's a winch kit like mentioned above, but you can also switch the parts around on the jack. That lets you compress or open things like a jaws of life if you need something like that. Mine's mounted in the truck 24x7 too.

cool. I'll order a hi-lift tonight as far as jacking points: I have a receiver hitch installed but everything else is factory. What are my options besides spending $3k on sliders and bumpers.

As an option, you could spend $4k on sliders and bumpers.

The rear hitch is the strongest thing at the rear of the truck. That bumper is tinfoil and will buckle under the weight of the truck. The front is plastic so...well, you get it.

I could see this being useful if it's hooked to the front tow hoop. Just place a towel over it so you don't scratch the paint.

And for use as a come along...

You'll find more uses for this jack than you'd can believe.

I'm planning on sliders at some point. At the moment my Hi-Lift is more useful around the house than with the truck! But I'm not planning on paying more than $600 for sliders. And that much is only if I get the bolt-on stone crushers from Demello. If I work up enough balls to try making or assembling some myself they'll be considerably cheap.

    Dude! Shrockworks!
    http://www.shrockworks.com/Toyota-T...cker-Protection-Nerf-Bars-2005+-pr-16188.html

$480 powdercoated and they look awesome! I ordered mine bare metal with the mounting arms separate so I could make it work with my particular setup, but really they're just a bolt-on deal.

Yeah, I've been looking at those too. Any idea why they only do 3 legs instead of 4 like most others?

You still have to drill the frame for those to bolt on right? Demello's bolt on with existing holes. So it's either pay more for cake installation, or go cheaper and have to work harder to install (drill frame, or weld them on myself).

I could weld them myself (I think). I'm just worried about all the brake lines and crap inside the frame rails. My luck I'd get the metal too hot and melt a brake line or something.

Either way, I can't even afford the $200 DIY sliders at this point so it doesn't really matter.

Not sure why the 3 legs but they are really stout. Mine are bolted on (no real problems drilling through the frame as long as you step up your drill bits gradually) and can easily hold the weight of the truck.

When the time comes, whichever ones you get, post some pictures! :)

Thanks for the info! Wish I had a couple grand just for Shrockworks right now! I'd be ordering a bumper, winch and sliders.
