I currently commute 90 minutes a day... Of course this is on the train, I only drive my Tacoma 7-10 minutes to the train station where it sits until I return.

I have started thinking that a change of employment might be in my future, something closer to home that would necessitate me to drive up to 30 miles one way. I previously saw a thread with a poll, but it was on the older side of things. I also thought maybe get a beater if I do do it for the daily grind but then upkeep/insurance and the such would negate any savings.

So my question really comes down to.. Do you commute and what do you do, do you have a beater you use unless the weather is nasty, or does the Taco just do the trick? Do you wish you had a different vehicle to do the commute?

I drive my 2010 DC Sport 40 miles round-trip each day. I traded in a 2005 Escalade on the Taco. The Caddy was obviously the perfect commuter vehicle due to the comfort and ride quality, but not so much with the AC breaking from time to time and the 12-14 mpg average.

I don't believe in having two cars, and even if I did I don't think the Taco is nice enough to merit it. In fact, the Taco may one day become my commuter/beater when I have some kind of sports car in the garage.

Winter time I drive my truck as a DD.
Summer it is a mixed bag between my 97 Honda Del Sol & the Truck even going on trips.
My commute is like your train station though 7-10 min max. but I go Maine like once a month so its nice to switch off, save gas & miles when I can.
Also the other car is paid for & requires little to no maintenance, & insurance/dmv fees very low. That helps keep it around.

I've got a 28mile commute each way, and I take my 06 DC 90% of the time. I traded in my 02 Deville for a down payment and i do miss the caddy's smooth ride, but not too much. The rest of the time I'm riding my VTX 1800C.

I drive my Tacoma everywhere. I commute about 10 miles each way but I used to have a 25 mile each way commute.

Motorcycle. I got a hell of a good deal on a good condition 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 250 for $1000, got good deals on new gear: Icon helmet for $70, Alpinestars jacket for $70, Alpinestars gloves for $50, and I took a Motorcycle Safety Class for $250.

All in all, under $1500 for a fun ride especially in the twisties, great parking anywhere, 65+ mpg, and about 0-60 in about 5 seconds.

I'd take that over a beater car any day.

I sincerely don't think a second vehicle is worth it, unless you already have it. But wanted to see what other people were doing.

Spending 2k on a vehicle and spending 400/yr on insurance. For a savings of 1k a year is not enough to warrant that second vehicle.

I have a bicycle that I ride to work on nice days. It's only like 5 miles to work. Other than that it's all the truck.

Cost of motorcycle and gear: $1500
Cost of humiliation and harassment from friends for riding a moped: Priceless!

Don't get me wrong, I started on the N250. But in the world of motorcycles and motorcyclists, riding the wrong bike is worse than not riding at all. It's very classist. Sure, you can be enlightened and say all the good things about the little Ninja, but it gets old pretty fast.

I wouldn't get on the highways around here on anything under a 600, and I'd prefer it to be at least a 750. The idea of a 250 on the highway scares the hell out of me. I was scared on the highways down here riding my old 1200!
