Well what would probably need to happen is this:
Find a vehicle with the a760 that hptuners supports, pull all the transmission tables, then use the hptuners to edit the tacoma ecu and basically copy/paste the a760’s transmission files.

If the tacoma ecu can control a 6th gear like I think I read in the hptuners thread, it could be possible to do this.
Hptuners gives basically full control of the stock ecu, so you can modify all the transmission tables.

So what your really saying is i need to contact HP tuners to make sure there is a backup option IF the stock ecu cant control the 6th gear without a reflash. I wonder if the orange virus tuning guys can also do this since I actually have their flashing device.

I would hit up @JustDSM he is the current forum hptuner wizard. Ovtune is pretty busy with third gens I doubt he has the motivation to look into this for us.

OP, I'm glad this thread blew up. If this is possible, it could become the next best upgrade for our 2gens. I just posted a question about swapping in the 1 UR-FE (4.6) also so it's interesting that many of you think these will both up easily and it's just a programming issue from there. Excited to see where this all goes.

I am working on putting the 1urfe and 6 speed auto up to my tacoma tcase. I have enough saved to buy the atlas4 speed incase it doesn't fit nicely.

I am also working on adding the center console shifter to match, and would love to see a display upgrade for the shift lights (would be ok with just the basic number display honestly)
If you haven't seen what i am installing it into, here are a couple pictures of my truck. biggest issue I have had is getting the time to do it. Not a small job and going places like the NWOR was much funner.

I believe you're referring to the throttle mapping. Even in the Auto trucks it has mapping for 6 gears.

For the transmission, the ECU only has the outputs to control the 5spd (A750). You could get creative and control it, but realistically it's not going to happen with the stock ECU in the Tacoma.

So what do you think about wiring to make the cab and internal stuff work with the a760f?? I have been doing some major stuff this summer but I got my temp vehicle and am working on finishing the build before November.

I know this is coming up on a year since the last post, but I have been interested in a 6th gear since upgrading to 4.88s. I love the response I get with my 33s and the truck is a blast to drive again, but I avoid highways like Coronavirus due to the drone of my magnaflow exhaust at ~2300 rpm (65-ish mph). When I saw that the 760's had mirrored 1-5th with a 6th, I started down the rabbit hole that led me here.

    Any updates are a positive.

So in August I took my truck over to have a Ute deck made. The whole truck was dismantled on the rear and a deck was started... Then parked outside for 6+ months now.
But I did find out some interesting facts.
1 - comparing two units side by side the casings and bolt pattern are indeed identical.
2- there is a standalone ECU made for 6 speed transmissions from compushift for the a750 and ab60. I have still not contacted them regarding the a760f at this time. Soon though.

If it makes you feel better I find 4.56 too high rpm on the highway and it stops me from cruising at 75-85mph lol

Have you contacted Gear vendors overdrives ?
I am fairly certain they make an overdrive to mate to the Atlas transfer case .
Essentially turn your factory 5 speed into a 10 speed lol .
Might cost a bit more than sourcing a 6 speed auto , but should save you some extreme headaches in the ECU handshake department

If you look at the actual function of what you linked. It's essentially another drop in gear. And only for 2wd. Not a high/low range like a semi splitter. For most people this may work but my plan is to run duel cases in the future so this would get in the way at best.

They make underdrive /overdrive combos for 4 wheel drives as well as 2 wheel drives
Either way you go , I would love to see a 760 build

Lol. No it doesn't make me feel better that 4.56s aren't really any better, but at least I know someone else is investing brain power on this project.

Do you have any pictures of the two sitting side by side? Who wouldn't love some visuals!

I also saw that there are controllers for A750F and AB60F trannys which made me question whether a AB60F has similar patterns, etc. like the A760F? The gearing in the AB60Fs is a little different and I think it would be more effort in the long run vs. the A760F. I think the only reason we don't see anything for the A760F is the lack of performance modification focus on the 4.6L. Fingers crossed at least

After seeing Nitro Gear's video where they took 4.88s and installed them in a stock 3rd gen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxBWZGQIScI), it seems as if the 6 speed is the perfect balance for anyone re-gearing their truck. Only issue with the 3rd gens is their completely asinine (my opinion, not fact) variable gear selection (for more info, check this out: https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/...-tacoma-transmission-and-how-we-are-fixing-it). The 760 upgrade on a 2nd gen when re-geared has the potential to be the sweet spot for performance, reliability, and practicality.

Working with an ECU/transmission controller company (compushift, OV, etc) there should be an application in which the 6th gear tables can be imported into the software for the A750Fs (key assumption: the ECU selects gears based off the tables in the A760F and they operate in the same method as the A750F [and they should given the generation of transmission they both are derived from]). At least in theory, and the basic research I have done, this seems fairly straight forward. Then the issue comes to working with the software company with initial operation testing and evaluation with a paired tranny.

I really think that this could be a primary mod for 2nd gen-ers considering it takes basic Toyota parts and a little software re-tooling. It would make the re-gearing option more appealing to many although it would add in rough estimations another $3K (liberal assessment) to the price tag. Seriously though, with how bullet-proof these trucks are, you'd get your money's worth out of it.

    Not an option. lol

I also think you're missing the intent here. Exhaust doesn't get me back to highway speeds at ~1800 rpms. Yes it gets rid of the drone, but then how will people know how cool I am?

The question is will you be able to push larger tires, lift, armor etc at 1800 rpms.... likely not.

Obviously the valve bodies are different . Here is how to identify between the two other than the casting numbers on the aluminum case
