I'm at a dealer to get the sensors re-programmed. Discount Tire's "gadget" only goes to 2013!

Sounds like they have not updated the software. I can tell you that the Autel device America's Tire had did update my 2016 Tacoma. I have a Toyota TIS tool and saw the new sensor IDs in the computer.

OK. Three hours later, everything is now working. Tire light is still out, and pressures indicating in all 4 corners on the tire screen. The dealer also did not have the new software and had to download it AFTER he broke down the tires to get the numbers off the sensors themselves.
So here's what we now know. If you are going to swap the "Styled Steel" SR5 wheels for new alloys, the sensors will work if they are flipped upside down. Being flat against the wheel has nothing to do with their function like the first dealer (Selling dealer) told me. The tire guys must be very careful with the installation because those sensors are now sticking up into the tire a bit. My thinking is that if I had insisted that the sensors had been replaced in the same corners they came out of, all this would have been avoided. It seems that the sensor ID's will need to be reprogrammed after every tire rotation. By the time most of us start our rotations, the software should have reached everyone that doesn't have it (including some dealers). There is DEFINITELY software/computer changes with the 3rd gen's. Discount Tire's "gadget" wouldn't even detect the 2016 sensors. If I missed something and can answer any question, let me know.

This dealer had NO 2016 Taco's on the lot.

Glad they got it sorted out. I'll be going through this again when my second set of TPMS show up this week.

That's what the little TPMS button on the lower left of dash by the hood release is for. After tire rotation, hold learn button with ignition on to relearn the location of each.

It will learn the new pressure. It did not learn the new position of the sensors. My low pressure warning light was out, but no pressure read outs on the tire page.

Mine took 2 day's to change location after held reset button, would just show -- on the display. My commute is very short so that is why, I think I read it will take longer. I think the manual says like "25mph+ for 10 miles, will delay with stop and go driving", something along those lines. I almost went back and blamed them for not swapping my old sensors over to me new wheels because it was not working.

Why not just buy some VDO replacement sensors and reprogram them according to your vehicle? It's not that hard. You could even mismatch 2 factory, and two aftermarket and/ or so forth. Toss them on, get everything all mounted up. Then when it comes time to reprogram, set your sensor degree settings (if they are aftermarket alloys, to 40 or 47 degrees) record your sensors settings, plug it into OBD 2 adapter, let the tool do it's reprogram and boom you are all done.

At least that's how the Snap On tool works. If the TIS one complicates it for you, then I am not sure what to tell you, as that one may approach the situation entirely different.

What do a set of sensors typically cost for alloy wheels?

Anywhere from 20.00 to 60.00 apiece, from what I have found.

I would imagine it was just a basic TPMS still, but given that it gives you readouts of the pressures, I wouldn't doubt that at all.

If they have, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles.

Got it all figured out. I came from 10 years in an 06 and loved it! Most of the new issues are from a lack of correct information. It's so new, even some dealers are lost.

Thanks to all who chimed in.
So if I'm reading this correctly (sorry if I'm not) I can take my factory installed TPMS sensors from a Trd sport alloy wheel and make them work for a new wheel swap to the TRD FJ matte grey wheels?
Keeping in mind that it's best to keep the sensors in the same corner that they originally came from. I'm trying to avoid buying new sensors, plan to sell the old tires/rims without the oem sensors.

From Toyota website on a TRD sport DBCB:
    • 17-In. Machined Alloy Wheels standard machined alloy wheels provide an attractive, dynamic look.

Absolutely. No issues in doing that. Alloy to Alloy is a direct swap.

If you need sensors, they are a PMV-C015. I just installed a set yesterday and all is well again.
