Yup....that's what I did on my '11.

 

A switch is better because you can toggle it on and off as needed from inside the cab while you are driving

If it is meant to be completely off, there is a lot of Tacomas that have incorrect programing.

I'm very familiar with how to turn the system off, so I know I'm doing the procedure correctly.

Here's an example of one of my experiences. One day when I was getting ready to leave work. Got in, turned the truck on, then turned off the system (long push). Starting driving down a wet road. (This is when my duratracs acted like they were on ice when roads were just wet.) Went into a left turn and the ass end kicked out real hard with tires spinning. I wasnt out of control, just riding the slide if you will. Almost immediately the brake system kicked in to correct the slide. No engine management, just brakes to bring the truck back into a straight line.

This was when I first realized the system never completely turned off. I've had this same type of situation happen many times with the system kicking in, but only in more extreme slides. It seems if it's under a certain speed it doesn't kick in at all.

 

Ironically, Auto-LSD (push VSC button once) is better for straight-line launches.

 

My 2012 DCLC SR5 turns it off completely by pressing the button for a few seconds. I just came back from 50 miles of logging roads that just thawed, believe me, traction control was disabled the hole time. I managed a whopping 9 MPG flying thru the muck spinning half the time

Like I said take it in and have it repaired.

 

Were you riding the skinny pedal a bit, or using the brake to control the slide? When my VSC is off it seems to be completely off, but the ABS is still functioning. With the VSC off I can go fast on washboard roads where it would normally come on. When braking in snow/ ice or loose gravel, the ABS will activate. If I control the drift with the skinny pedal, no nannies come on. If I feather the brake (much less effective anyway), the ABS tries to kill me.
