    Hi!

I am considering leaving my comfort zone to travel the US and live out of a Toyota Tacoma for 6 months to a year.

I’d like to be able to go on trails, but nothing too intense (I don’t need to go over huge rocks or boulders — albeit that’s v cool).

I have about 10k to spend, but ideally I’d like to spend less & I’m happy with an access cab.

Other than 4wd, what do I even need for this nomadic lifestyle where I will be driving a lot and going on lots of u paved trails? Do I need suspension? I’m completely clueless.

I apologize if this forum is not suitable for a newb like me. If that’s the case, just lmk!

Ohhh man! I think depends on your experience level. Have you ever been camping before? Do you know how to fix a flat tire? Do you know when to turn around if the trails get rough? Tons of info on this forum. Just gotta do shitload of reading!

Yes. Camping and backpacking I’m completely familiar and comfortable with. It’s more so the car. I mean, right now I drive a Honda CR-V, so that’s where I’m at haha.

I might also just spend a lot more and get a new taco if it’s worth it. I just really enjoy not having a car payment, but I know their resell value is ridiculously good. I just don’t know if I actually would NEED a TRD Off Road, or if I can just get a sport or SR5? I don’t understand half of the things on the Tacoma website . Research I shall!!! Thank you.

I can change a tire and check my oil, but that’s about it as of now.

Regular old 4x4 will get you down so many trails easily.

Living out of it is the fun part. There's a whole range between throwing a cooler, tent and tools in and going , all the way up to some crazy rig with a fridge and a bed in the bed. All depends on what your goals are and what you are comfortable with.

My only real advice is keep it simple, and less is more.

I found that it's pretty cool how you pick a " tacoma" as your starting rig! Old or new will get to your places! Probably would recommend getting a 4x4 and learning how to use it. I wish i can live by "less is more"

You should be able to find a nice 1st gen Taco, built enough for your needs, and possibly even a roof top tent (RTT) for right at or less than your budget! They're easy to work on and bullet-proof!

sounds exciting. i'd have to agree....keep it simple. usually when simple breaks, its a simple fix....usually when complex breaks, its a complex fix. there are plenty of resources, i'm sure you will find your way. Welcome from SE VA - keep us posted. Enjoy!
