6+ years with my canopy/cap (Leer) and no issues with my bed. In fact, just had the cap off for 3 weeks for some collision work after hitting a moose, and the bed rails & bed we're all just fine (contrary to what is often reported here).

He did mention something that made me wonder. When I went to check out my friend's Tacoma, the bed is screwed down with torx screws, and the screws were a little bit rusty. Would that rust be just cosmetic or it's actually rusting?

SMC is sheet molded compound. It's base resin is an unsaturated polyester mixed with a catalyst, some filler like calcium carbonate, some long glass fiber, pigment and UV stabilizer. It's molded in huge hydraulic presses and is heat cured at a little over 300F. It's the same stuff that all the big trucks hoods, wind deflectors and such are made of. It's good stuff and will outlast the rest of the truck.

Throw a bed mat in it and consider it good. I have considered having Rhino or Line-X sprayed in the bottom of mine but I don't think it's worth the cost.

It's just surface rust. Don't worry about it.

How is chain bar oil gonna degrade the bed? I've gotten some on mine and ya, it's a bitch to get it all off, but it hasn't done anything to the bed.
I've loaded my truck with cinder blocks, gravel and the like and this bed looks a hell of a lot better than a steel bed would after carrying that stuff

...To get us back on topic...

I've had 2 second gen Tacomas and used both as trucks. No real "special care" on the composite beds other than running a Softopper and hosing them out every now and again. Zero issues thus far other than the bed bolts looking crappy. I don't think twice about hauling, dropping, sliding, whatever I need to do.

Some people say local LineX shops refuse to coat their truck because it doesn't stick well to the composite material and/or requires much more prep time to properly bond. Some people say it works great.

Horse stall mat from Tractor Supply is pretty popular for a bed mat. Cut it to fit. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rubber-mat-black-4-ft-x-6-ft?cm_vc=-10005

Was wondering about this today... what is a reasonable price for the Line-X?

I actually called the Line-X guy here where I live and he said that he did his mother-in-law's Tacoma, so it is doable but lots of extra prep work for him so he would rather not. I called the Rhino Liner guy and he said, no problem, bring it on down. I am a very pro "Spray in bed liner" guy but it is hard on the knees.

I'd just put a bed mat in it, if what you're worried about is stuff sliding around.

for me, I would like to have mine sprayed because its old, faded, scratched, gouged and ugly... Line-X would bring it back to beautiful again.

    500$

My dad just paid 600$ for a f250 long bed with rails spraid. I paid 300$ for my avid sliders sprayed and subwoofer box. So right around 500$. Used a line-x dealer in Rancho, CA. Huge fan of line-x and may even line x my lower part of truck soon. Did not do bed though just did oem mat.

Ok.....SO, allow me to end this thread for the OP. #1...you're entire bed is composite, there is NO liner. If you have a grinder(if not borrow one from a friend & make sure to return it....guys are really cranky about unreturned tools) & gently sand the "sheen" off the raised aisles in the bed floor(this is to help the next step adhere & stick to the surface). No need to go crazy here. We just wanna get the gloss off. Then, make your way to the nearest AutoZone/Pep Boys or whatever you have in your area(if there is a Taco Bell on the way, stop by for a Mexican Pizza) & pick up a can of HERCULINER. You can buy it as a kit, which includes a roller, etc. or you can buy the quart & use your own roller. Next & without making a big mess, roll the Herculiner onto the RAISED bed aisles & allow to dry. That stuff drys like 30 grit sand paper & is cheap. I promise NOTHING will move in your bed without slamming the brake pedal through the floor at 90 mph. DONE. Seriously, this is super easy & cheap & works....and it's black & will match your bed. I did this to my 07 & put it through hell...not a whimper. Now mind you, in time if you're sliding shit across it ALL the time, eventually it will wear. But, no worries...there is a great solution. Put another coat on. You're welcome :)
