After owning the 2nd gen 4.0 and then the 3rd gen 3.5 the torque difference is a big deal. That's where the complaints come from.

I had a 4.7 gen1 tundra before picking up this tacoma. The low ends were not all that far apart, with the tundra having a bit more, but my tacoma is very acceptable.

I've thought about getting a tune but tbh, I probably wont keep the truck long enough to do so. My next truck will likely be a gx460 and then I wont even need to debate it. ha!

With the gx460 you're not going to have torque problems.

Yeah, pretty big difference between the two. I know it isnt all the motor's fault, though. The gear spacing between 2 and 3 are dumb af and the motor cant make up for it like the 4.0 could. A better transmission would have solved all of this. (not just a tune)

I hear great things, and I am definitely open to doing it. SUV is far more practical for me in my 40s (dont ever get old) than a truck is.

You can check with a local tuner, I think some of them will let you try it. If you don't see the value they'll tune it back to stock for nothing.

Imo, if you needed a tune, something wasn't right with the truck to begin with. I could see some getting a tune because of just wanting one, not that it was really needed.

Yeah, they sell the scented type that don't stink like the old school stuff, but I found there not very effective keeping rodents away.

Here we go again. Your truck is perfect, and everybody else's isn't? Honestly, your opinion doesn't matter, unless you've tried a tune to see the difference. Only then could you comment about a tune honestly.

I think you are correct that “something wasn’t right with the truck to begin with”.
Toyota attempting to appease the emissions gods by programming piss poor auto trans shift logic from the factory in the earlier 3g.

A tune fixed that “something”, in my case.

That's because your MT 3rd gen is running 2300 RPM's at 70 MPH where an AT Taco is only running 1700 in 6th. It makes a HUGE difference in highway drivability. Toyota should have given the AT the lower gear ratio, but decided gaming emissions with unrealistic, flat track only, MPG's was more important than real world drivability.
