Compression test gone wrong

    So there I was. Trying to turn the compression test hose onto the spark plug threads. I didn’t get it nearly on there enough cus when I turned the engine over the whole hose popped off. Then I realized I could just wrench the extension in that comes with the kit and then thread the rest of the hose by hand. Easy enough right? The extension used a 17mm socket. At some point I think I believed it was on there enough so I tried pulling it out but the socket stayed in there and it’s already a pretty tight fit. I tried just taking everything out and I’m pretty sure I just cross threaded the shit out of it… Idk how I cross threaded it trying to REMOVE it. I usually never make these kinda mistakes. I work on this truck all the time so I’m pretty frustrated about it. I’ve already spent two days just trying to do the damn compression test but my lack of tools and time have been stalling me.

    So now the compression test extension is stuck in there with the 17mm socket on it. ISO tips n tricks to remove it. This is my DD and I go back to work Thursday.

    And if it is cross threaded, what’s the worst case? Getting the spark plug hole re-threaded? I’m sure that’ll be cheap..

    I was hoping maybe I just haven’t turned it enough times but we’re not making any progress backing out. Should I tighten it and try loosening again?

    I'd call it a night and attack it again tomorrow morning before it gets hot. Sometimes a good night's sleep and a clear mind contribute to resolve the issue. Sure has worked for me over the years.

    Have you got a picture of what’s going on? I recently did the test and had a cross threaded spark plug. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/yellow-gunk-in-spark-plug-well.767574/#post-27409869

    I just eased it back and forth a 1/8th turn at a time till I got it out to minimize the damage, then ran a thread chaser through to (straighten?) and clean out the threads. Ended up being fine in the end. But if you obliterate them I would think a Heli coil would fix it. Or whatever brand they have at the local parts store.

    I’ll definitely probably have to look into that heicoil! For now, I can’t even get them out.

    I’m still slightly confused as to what is on what. Compression tester fitting stuck in thread, hose popped off, socket stuck on fitting? Can’t get a socket extension down there?

    This guy is stuck in there with a 17mm on it. Cross threaded. That’s it.

    Do you have a magnet? A strong one might do it.


    Can you get a picture with it focused on the thing in the hole instead of the outsode of the hole? Might generate some more ideas.

    I can get my socket extension down there and connected to the 17mm but I can feel that’s it’s clearly cross threaded and won’t come out.

    You’ll just have to force it then and hope it’s not as bad as you think. Just try a thread chaser first once you get it out before jumping to the Heli coil.

    Negative. I attempted my magnetic spark plug socket. Just wasn’t gonna work.

    And, that fitting doesn’t use up all the threads, so it probably only crossed a few on the top. A thread chaser might clean that up and you’ll be alright.

    I dropped some motor oil down there when I did it. I figure either would be fine. Not sure if it helped or not

    And god fore bid if all else fails you'd have to pop off valve cover and unscrew that one tube....
    not the end of the world.....

    U'd have a Coupon for a free valve clearance check while there......

    SUCCESS. Wd40 and some oil seemed to help a little and applying pressure to different sides while loosening got the sucker out!
