My thought was if we can compile all the dealerships then the ones that dont have pricing for, for instance, the bed mat, they presumably don't sell parts and can be purged out of the list. Figured that was a better route than missing some.

 

I did something similar a few weeks ago. I was trying to find the lowest priced skid plate. I posted my code there as well. Maybe we can collab on something

Btw, I’m not a programmer but I’m up for learning something new.

 

I like how that searches all dealers nearest specific zip code, which would be good if the part needs to shipped at a cost or picked up (which is 99% of the time unless they have a free shipping sale like they did for Memorial Day).

 

Since I don't know the first thing about Python and have no idea where to even start, I think I've managed to get this working in Excel!

My current list of dealers has been purged down as some sites don't connect (likely meaning that dealership doesn't sell parts) or it's formatted different than the standard, which I've noted.

It takes a while to crunch through the list but 1) it's still a LOT faster than you can do it manually and 2) it will obviously run without you being there.

I'll figure out how to post it in a bit.

 

I should also let you know that google has this functionality covered. Just copy the part number to google, select shopping, and sort by price. It should bring up dealers with the lowest price.

I found this out after I finished my script

 

I just tried that with

$459 PTR6035190 PTR60-35190

PTR6035190 (the Tacoma TRD skid plate) and the search results gave me

$403 PTR6089190 Toyota Genuine PT938-00140 TRD Stamped Aluminum Front Skid Plate

PTR6089190 (the 4R TRD skid plate). Are they interchangeable?

At a minimum, at least I know my function is pulling the correct part, so suck it, Google.

I forgot excel could do HTTP stuff, but then again, why should I be surprised?

 

I couldn't find a GUI for Python or how to even get it started so I got scared and went to Excel.

Doing some quick refining on the Excel file now. Small things like adding instructions...

I just read through this thread and: awesome, all around. I work in the tech industry but I haven't written a line of code in... um... shit... twenty years? No, I can't possibly be that old. Fuck.

Anyway! If you could figure out the shipping issue, I think you'd one-up Google. Generally dealership websites don't provide the shipping cost until I've got an item in the cart and I'm ready to check out... and only then I discover that the shipping costs more than the part (understandable for big, heavy items, but sometimes even the shipping costs for small piddly items is insane in a world accustomed to free two-day shipping).

Like I just tested it with a rear bumper pad (Part no 5205704020). Google told me that McGeorge Toyota will sell it to me for $224... but that doesn't include the $44 they'll charge me for shipping--I had to go to the site and add the bumper to the cart to find that out. If you guys could somehow code something that would not just scrape prices, but, if the user provides their zip code, would also progress things along with each individual site to discover the shipping costs and rank the parts by total overall cost, you could have something incredibly useful. And I mean, if you somehow could also include shipping times (because I've noticed those can vary widely too), so much the better.

I offer no solutions for this, because I've spent most of the last two decades [shudders] in the words-and-bullshit side of the business. And who knows, the above suggestion may be way more work than the income the final produce would generate. Just my two cents. And either way, kudos to you for getting this thing going!

 

Save the attached Excel file somewhere, open it then follow the instructions.
