A crackhead watched me use the ATM once, broad daylight, downtown Reno. He tried to get uppity, but my body language and loud yelling at him to leave me alone gave him enough hints to figure out he didnt want my money badly enough to see if I was bluffing. Lucky him.
I carry either a Glock 23, S&W 642, or a Kimber full size 1911. Depends on my mood and attire. I have a Bianchi clip on IWB holster for each.

Condition 2 is just as bad, if not worse than condition 3. First, you are dropping the hammer on a live round. I can think of many reasons that is a bad idea. Second, thumbing the hammer back takes more time and skill than dropping the safety. Can you reliably thumb the hammer under pressure? Watch that vid again and answer that question again. How many shots do you want to take while f-ing with the hammer?

The 1911 was designed to be carried condition 1. Anything else is just asking for trouble:)

That video is a great example of why we train, train for contact, dynamic shooting, downed shooter and trauma management.

One of my favorite summations of the shooter mentality.

    Well said!

Fire931 and I ended up in the WRONG part of town at a gas station on a road trip we were on with no possibility of getting too far without the stop. Definitely armed to the teeth and ready to do what was needed to get out of there should SHTF. Tow truck driver saw us out there and made the suggestion to haul ass ASAP. Little on the anxious side but we've trained and our heads were on a swivel, fortunately no encounters but we were absolutely watching each others back.

Having never been under pressure... I don't know. But like I did mention, I did carry locked/cocked with a break-strap also restraining the hammer (with my 1911 clone). though I did practice drawing the hammer back - it's not as difficult as you think.

On the M9, the firing pin rotates w/ the safety, so theoretically it's out of hte way as the hammer drops.

Anyway, it's all preference. My at-home weapon is a Sig, doesn't even have a safety. Just keep it in DA, no need to pull the hammer back.

I love NC, they are passing the CC in places that serve alcohol, and around Christmas we should have our castle doctrine passed. Our castle doctrine includes the home, the place of employment, and in your vehicle, with an amendment that states it is illegal for a business to outlaw its employees the right to keep a gun in a locked glove box on company property.

I have never had to brandish my gun because if it is coming out it is for the sole purpose of me pulling the trigger till the slide locks back. What I do is I go from chamber empty to cocked , chambered, and on safe, if I ever feel threatened. I have been in that condition 3 times, twice at the drag strip, that is why I stopped drag racing. My preferred carry is an HK USP compact chambered in .40sw. It has a safety and goes boom every time I ask it to. If I am in shorts and a t-shirt I carry a hammerless .38Spl, its enough gun to get me back to the HK if need be.

I wish PA would adopt something similar in allowing you to keep a firearm in a locked compartment while on prohibited areas.

In Idaho, they have a similar type law - The law protects employers from liability if they don't prohibit firearms stored in private vehicles while on their property.

Was driving home one evening and passed a car on the interstate. A few miles down the road, they passed me, shot me a bird and slowed way down (65 to 45).

I have no idea as to why.

Moved to get off the interstate, they moved with me. Then I noticed another truck tailgating me. "Oh boy, something is up." I thought

We pull onto road off the exit, the truck behind me pulls up and paces me. 2 guys in the truck. I think they are trying to box me in and force me off.

I reach under my seat, pull out my 1911, let them see me check to see it loaded, place the pistol on my dash.

These two guys freak out, speed up to the car in front, the passenger in the truck is waving and pointing his arms at the driver in the car.

The car pulls into the next gas station, the truck pulls into the one across the street. I speed up and make sure I lose them and never heard anything from anyone.

In the words of Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth "Who needs courage when you have a gun?" HA HA

Good story. Glad that you didn't have to use it.

I had a very similar experience several years ago. I was in my Nissan truck when another truck with 3 guys pulled beside me, and just stayed beside me. Eventually they pulled in front of me, blocked me from passing, and were slowing down. It seemed pretty obvious they were trying to force me to a stop. The guy on the passenger side kept looking back at me, and talking to the other 2.

I had a 4" barreled Model 66 .357 in the glove compartment, and reached over and got it out and laid it on the seat. All of a sudden, they sped up, the guy on the passenger side pulled his head back in, and was excitedly gesturing to the other 2. It took me few seconds to figure out what had happened.

I realized that when I got the gun out of the glove compartment, I had inadvertantly raised it high enough to be plainly visible above the dash and through the windshield. Not sure what they really had in mind, but it was obvious that the sight of my handgun quickly changed their plans.

What prompted me to get my CC was one night I was driving down the highway and a small tree maybe 4 inches in diameter was laying perfectly across the highway. I could not avoid it and ran it over. I didn't feel any vibration so I kept on trucking. Well about a 1/4 mile down the road there was two people waiting just inside the tree line. Had I damaged my car and pulled over I probably would have been robbed. If you travel at all you need a CC as your road companion.

I'm a builder/general contractor. I own a building in the little town (pop. about 400) close to where I live that I use to store bldg materials, and tools. and it is right across the street from the police station (the police force consists of the "Chief" and one patrolman.)

Often I would pull up to my building, leave my truck running, get the bldg keys out of the glove box, and run in to get a tool, or put one away. One time when I did this, I apparently bumped the interior door lock, and when I came out, there sat my truck idling, and locked. I noticed the patrolman in front of the station across the street, so I went and asked him if he had a slim jim to help me unlock my truck. He got the slim jim out of the patrol car, and walked across the street to my truck, and started to try and unlock it. I was looking over his shoulder to see if he was making any progress, when I realized that the glovecompartment door was still open, and my .357 was laying there in full view. At the time, I did not have a carry permit.

I told the officer not to worry about trying to open my door, I would just call my wife and have her bring the other key. He said well, I think maybe I need to get some advice from the chief. He got on his radio, called the cheif, and said "We have a situation here".

The chief came over, looked in my truck then said "Well, I can plainly see it, so I guess its not concealed", then asked if I had a carry permit. I told him no, and he just suggested it might be a good idea to get one if I wanted to keep a handgun in my truck.

At that time, carrying concealed in a vehicle was just a misdemeanor (and even then, rarely enforced), but some months later the legislature made it a felony. That's when I decided I needed to get a carry permit.

In Georgia, a permit is not needed if the pistol is in full view, be it in your vehicle or on yourself.

Also true in NC. Actually, it is not a violation unless it is both concealed AND accesible. NC is also an open carry state, no permit required.

Ohio is open carry. You must have a permit to carry in a vehicle, though.

x2 ^^. I feel this prevents carelessness and menacing. I also will never shoot to wound, always to kill; this serves the same purpose as "never drawing unless you intend to fire" and could save a legal headache afterwards.

I CC every day and use this as "yardstick" for every situation - Does this person deserve to die for the situation we are in right now? I think it also puts the carrier in the correct mindset for CC; if you are going to carry a weapon, you need to be fully prepared to use it to it's full [lethal] potential, or you could end up making a lesser situation worse.

    Just my two cents.
