And get your Mom into shooting.... atleast, to build her confidence back up again.

Granted, having gun skills isn't gonna prevent anything from happening to you....but you can certainly learn a lot from some self defense classes. I think that's one of the better ways of building confidence.

    I have guns too .

I have a Walther p22 and a H&K uspc .40, but I don't have a ccw and haven't been shooting for a few years . I can't really conceal either of my guns on me very well, so recently I've been considering getting a small .380 to carry.

My bf doesn't carry and isn't into guns, he prefers for me to carry when we are together or when I'm alone, based on my previous LE experience. I now work with a bunch of retired cops and military guns, so they are good for tips and info and I've been talking with them about what they and their wives carry concealed.

Yea i have heard that in traffic stops, either put the firearm on the dash before you get to the LEO, and keep your hands in plain view, and tell them straight up that you have a loaded firearm on your person, and i have heard if they want to see it, that you let them get it. And tell them they can handcuff you before they get it if they would feel safer that way. And of course show them your CC permit with your license. Just my 2 cents.

I will be getting my CC permit as soon as i can.

All of this will be covered in your CCH class. The one the NRA puts on is exceptional.

I don't mean to offend but it sounds like you're a little jumpy. I don't know your personal situation or the part of town you're in but I don't think most people would go reaching for a gun when they hear a tap on their window. Maybe the guy looked at you funny because of the way you were acting?

I'm sure you will get a ton of shit for what you just said, as will I, but I mostly agree with you. Fortunately I've never lived in an area where I've had a constant fear for my life, and I don't think just in case really constitutes having a gun on you. Just in case, to me, is a more appropriate reason to have a gun in your house. I did see a cop on here who said "just in case" but I view that differently as he is trained for situations requiring a gun. I think the majority of instances a gun is needed "just in case" can just as easily be avoided, i.e. sketchy parties, bad parts of town, and such. I've heard on the news many instances of stray bullets killing innocent bystanders but haven't heard one where somebody stepped in and saved the day with their personal gun. Just one man's opinion.

yep that exactly what you want to be doing fondling your gun when you are pulled over...unless your state has a duty to inform i say nothing for state patrol i normally inform they are way more professional than the cops in my county...i never inform locals of anything

In Michigan we're to inform the officer (weapon in the vehicle or not) that we are a Permit holder, and that we do/do not have a weapon. If we are carrying then we are to inform them where it is located. If they request the weapon we're to give it to them once the chamber is cleared.

I was taught to NOT pull the gun out and set it for view. When I get pulled over, I turn on the dome light. roll the window down, and place both hands on the steering wheel and face forward until he asks for insurance and registration proofs. I tell him where they are so he knows the gun is not in the same location and give it to him.

I've been pulled over just a few times since my CCW and the officers always seem appreciative of my method, I think it helps them to relax as I've been told the CCW comes up on my plates when they run them so they know when they come to the window

Cases where ccw holders have defended themselves and/or other people happen ALL the time. The incidents are under-reported by the media. You can find many incidents outlined in the NRA's website as well as BuckeyeFirearms.org.
Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist;)

Let's get two things straight. One, I don't carry out of fear of being shot any more than I bring a rainfly for my tent because I'm afraid of rain. It's simply a tool to have on me in case I need it, nothing more.

Second, I avoid trouble just like I avoid rain while camping. I stay out of bad areas, and so forth, and I don't intend to go to the ghetto just because I have a permit. However, sometimes despite the forecast, rain finds you... and sometimes, despite your best intentions, trouble does too.

My honest wish is that I never have to use my gun for anything but target practice at the range, which I enjoy. I most certainly do not have a "hard on" for concealed carry permits; I think carrying a gun is a perfectly acceptable thing to do as long as the person has taken the time to understand how to do so safely, and it is a good backup if something bad were to happen. Most states require a pretty decent amount of training and in some cases a marksmanship certification of some sort, so that covers that.

It's just backup, like a fire extinguisher, that's all.

I know that in Arizona, there is no need to disclose. However, if the officer asks if you are armed, then you must disclose it and it is at the officers discretion as to whether or not they want to confiscate the weapon for no longer than the duration of the stop. Failure to disclose the weapon when asked is prosecutable in the same way that it was to conceal carry without a permit before the law passed several months ago. (don't quote me on this but I believe that it's a class 2 misdemeanor)

Also, if the "hard on" for concealed carry permits refers to the bravado some people use when talking about shooting somebody, I agree wholeheartedly that this chest-thumping is simply disgusting. Hopefully nobody here actually wants to shoot somebody, or you may need to get your head examined.

I think there is nothing good about gun violence, but I also think that there are certainly cases where there aren't any other options. Guns may aid in crime, but they're an unparalleled force equalizer between two unequal combatants.

Say nobody had guns at all. Well, does that stop rapists from raping? Maybe, but I'd bet not a whole lot.

Does it reduce the options for smaller women to defend themselves from larger assailants? Absolutely.

So where's the big gain in getting rid of them again?

    Awesome!!!

I think the husband is considering getting some smaller guns for CC sometime down the road..... he's been eyeballing the 9mm compacts that are coming out. For me, I'd have to shoot & feel them first. I'd definately want a laser. Definately need to get into some classes....

Too bad someone wasn't carrying in AZ when all those people were killed the other day. Had there been maybe things would have turned out differently.

I have a CPL and carry under these personal rules: Don't carry it unless your ready to draw it and don't draw it unless your ready to use it. I have drawn my weapon but kept it out of sight on two occasions. Both occations involved meth heads. One where two men aggressively approached my wife and I while at a hiking trailhead. The other happened after a guy cut me off and slammed on his breaks causing be to hit him. I drew my pistol when he began trying to to punch out my window(He went to jail).

That said..... I carry anywhere I am comfortable that by gun will not be seen by others. The bad guy not knowing you have a gun is tactically more valuable then having them know for certain that you do (ie showing them the weapon by drawing it). Not wanting to get "anyone" in trouble..... I have a "friend" who regularly carries to church, bars (when not under the influence), and school (college). "he" feels that "he" is a responsible gun owner and will not be told he cannot carry in the areas that are most likely to have (Columbine/ VT/ Arizona/ New Life Church style) gun violence.

Yup, it will come up when they run your tags. In NC they will usually (always?) call for a second car prior to approaching your vehicle.
