My wife carried a M&P Shield 9mm for years before we got together. Fit perfectly in her hands and worked well for her. Her new-found favorite is the Sig P938 that I got her a couple years ago though lol.

I'll add something that may be of value and is in line with what others have suggested.

So back in the late winter/early spring (pre-Covid craziness) a female friend asked me about purchasing a handgun for self-defense, personal protection, concealed carry, etc. My range offers free rentals on Mondays, so off we went. I let her deal directly with the staff and they pulled out several (all 9mm) for us/her to try. We spent 2+ hours handling/shooting a bunch. Best experience of her brief firearms life. She ended up preferring the SW M&P compact. I didn't even tell her the brand/model of the firearm before loading and handing them to her.

I then let her shoot my HK VP9 and that quickly became her favorite, but was a bit more than her budget.

She did not like the sub-compact models at all...too whippy.

She ended up purchasing the SW M&P 9mm compact for a great price. And size wise, that was on the larger end for the compacts.

It's a nice compromise between concealability and shootability.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm is great. High capacity and slim single stack.

As others have said, get her to try several different gun/caliber combinations to see what she likes.

Maybe most women prefer smaller calibers, then again I know a few who like and carry 1911s.

As to 9mm, it like any other round, it will kill you dead if shot placement is good.

Take your opinions and put them aside OP, if it isn’t your gun to carry, it isn’t your gun to pick.

Shooters like you are usually what fuck up shooting for new shooters.

'nother vote for M&P Shield. I have an Springfield XDm 3.8" that I bought for CCW. My wife has the Shield. I find myself carrying the Shield mist of the time. Carrys nice, shoots well. Loaded with 8 rounds of Federal 124gr HST's.

Having introduced and taught guns/shooting to both my sisters and my wife (my daughters all served so no need there) I would definitely think wheel gun. As has been mentioned, a S&W 642 is a nice option, and I have become a big fan of Underwood ammo’s Extreme Defender, in this case their .38sp. +P.
