What are you not hearing good about the 3.5? It is a proven engine used in many platforms thru Lexus and Toyota, I cannot recall anyone on here having an engine failure.

No issues here. I think Toyota nailed it.

Google the 3.5 L engine. Look at all the applications and how many Toyota uses of them. They are pretty much bulletproof.

Don't ask us, go drive a few and make your own mind up instead.

I had a 05, then an 09 and now a 18. The 18 is my favorite by far. The shifting did take a week or so to get used to. The power is definitely higher up in the RPM.

One thing you have to realize is the 2nd gen has a 5spd auto and this one a 6spd. Of course it will shift more because it has more gears. Going up a hill by me it will drop to 4th, 2 gears down and haul ass. The 2nd gen would climb the same hill dropping 1 gear to 4th. The 2nd gen has more torque but less hp. From a stop the 2nd gen starts quicker, but once moving the 3rd gen is def quicker. It really pulls up high where the 2nd really falls flat once past 4K rpm. I’ve driven probably like 300k miles in my 2nd Gen Tacoma’s so I feel very qualified to compare them.

I just loaded up my truck with camping gear, 2 adults and 2 kids. We headed about 150 miles away, it drove great and we averaged 19.8mpg on the trip. My 09 would never crack 17-18mpg and even less when loaded up.

And this is just the same variation as the Tacoma. There are dozens of variations in everything from avalons, Camry’s, lotus, etc...

This is a tested and true engine.

The manifold is integrated into the block. That one inlet is where the exhaust system starts.

I have a 16 TRD OR DCSB with a 6 speed with 75000mi on it and all I have had to do to it was get the oil changed. I do a lot of freeway driving I some times skip gears and go 4th to 6th with no prob. I have towed and put a lot of junk in it and yes the springs are a little soft for my liking but it does flex.

My 07 4.0 definitely felt like it had more power than my 18.

    2.7 > 3.5. I like the 3.4, 4.0, and 2.7 engines.

The 3" lift pro comp, bushwacker fender flares, window deflectors, bug guard shield, roof rack, dual exhaust, bull bar with KC lights. May add tool box and tonneau cover.
I agree about the power. My 2015 4.0 had more power then my 3.5 2018 Tacoma. I hope they go back to the 4.0

That ship has sailed. The 4.0 couldn't meet stricter emission standards so it's gone.

You mean the engine that’s still in the 4Runner is gone?

I don’t think people buy tacomas for the power. I got it for reliability, utility, off-road capability, not too big, and it makes me a cooler person.

That I’m aware of. Do you think they will get the 3.5 as well?
