The 4Runner is super heavy. I’m wondering what configuration of the engine they will use, there are a dozen designs.

Hopefully they tune it for more low end grunt or gear it accordingly

I would agree except the 3.5 has more hp, more torque and a tad bit faster 0-60 time. I guess, other than that, the 4.0 has more power lol.

    D-ring tie-downs.
Before getting my '18 TRD OffRoad I serious considered a Tundra or GM full size. I drive an F350 dually utility bed for work. Ford re-engineers things that shouldn't be. I MF the thing at least once a day. Junk brakes, junk suspension, stupid shift algorithm. There's a reason there are steep discounts and fleets use them. Pure junk, but you can personalize them out the wazoo from the factory. My TRD rides smooth, shifts smooth, has adequate power and the ergonomics are designed by adults. If you need full size, get a Tundra.

I expect Toyota will redesign the 4runner and it may shed some weight. It will be interesting how they approach it considering the current 4runner's strong sales numbers but they do have to bring it into this century.

The 2018 is great IMO. I've had no issues at all. No idea what this transmission concern is about. It has considerably more power than the prior gen Tacoma. And if you want to drive it for great fuel economy, you can squeeze some good mpgs out of this motor. I love this V6 personally. If you want it to drive like a Colorado with more pep, just hit the ECT button.

If one thing is for certain, cars do not get lighter. They may include weight saving material or designs but will overall increase in weight.

    You mean not experienced?

Really, I've driven my brother's 4.0 and while it's got a little more grunt down low, there is no way I'd take a 2nd Gen over a 3rd. The 3rd is an all around nicer truck (as it should be being a refined truck). The 3.5 is a little happier in the higher rpm band, but the truck pulls fine for what a little truck is designed for. The truck will scoot when you put the coals to it (again for what the truck is designed for). I don't see a significant difference between the power in either generation and neither are in the ball park for the full sized V8 trucks in terms of torque or power.

I see lots of complaints on this forum, but I am extremely satisfied with my 2017 Tacoma. If totaled today, I'd go right to the Toyota dealer and buy another one.

Oh, I agree with getting a good test drive. It does like to downshift when it needs power..... Also, based on the OVTune threads, it looks like the drive by wire tuning doesn't open the throttle plate in a linear fashion like a cable would.... meaning you do have to mash the gas more to get it to actually open the throttle plate and accelerate faster.

Drive it, see if you like it or it bothers you.

I like my truck a lot and would buy it again, but it ain't perfect. It does do what I expect it to though. It ain't a hot rod and it won't be.... at least not until I drop in a LSx or something.

@Woodrow F Call Like I said, "from what I've read on here." That is my experience with a 3rd gen. So my opinion isn't worth much.

I have both motors in similar platforms....the 3.5L is happiest when spooled up a bit higher over the 4.0L, but they are comparable once you learn how to drive it. Now, the brakes are another story...my Tacoma is touchy versus my 4R, but in a good way.

What everyone forgets is proper perspective. Maybe 300 people post in this section who actually own a 3rd gen.
After reading comments from some of the 3rd gen owners, i wouldn't trust them to even know the color of their truck, much less anything technical.
Many of the disparaging comments come from people who haven't even driven one, let alone owned one.
The Tacoma is not perfect. No vehicle is.
Lastly, 20K Tacomas are sold every month. Probably a tenth of a percent post on the internet about their trucks. Very few people talk about how great something is, most people talk about stuff they don't like.

    Perspective.
