How they managed to register and insure without being a citizen is beyond me.

    No kidding.

When I was rear ended on the freeway there were 4 people inside the other vehicle that rear ended my vehicle. They were all illegally in the US, they all stated they didn't know who was driving, none of them had a driver's license or insurance, and not a damn thing happened to any of them.

If they were legally in the country I can guarantee that their sh!t would have hit the fan in one way or another.

    It's ridiculous.

The reason why.... the truck is designed to be "sacrificial" in order to protect the passengers

Yes, I would like to think that gap difference is being caused by the hit on the rear. Once the shop determines if the frame is, or isn't salvageable the ensuing pull will get things to line up again.

Honestly this is why I love driving a Tacoma. I've been in accidents 3 times with Tacomas and never walked away hurt. Every time the truck has completely absorbed the impact and protected me!

I think Toyota engineers were using their brain with the Tacoma frames design. Thinner frames weigh less which increases the vehicle's performance and gas mileage. In accidents the frames fold exactly where they were designed to fold. The rust issues would be near equally damaging to a thicker frame because once rust starts it's eventually game over anyway. I don't know the year of your old Chevy but I seriously doubt a new Chevy Colorado has a beefier frame than the Tacoma - in the interest of comparing apples to apples. There have been many studies of comparing accidents on older vehicles versus new vehicles, the 1959 Chevy comparison video immediately comes to my mind, and newer vehicles are a LOT safer than older vehicles mainly due to crumple zones and inner door supports.

    You buying? ;)

I might have considered it but the cap on this 2nd Gen is brand new, less than 2 years old and I paid about $2500 for it (set up for camping). 2nd Gen caps don't fit 3rd Gens

Works like any claim. If it is totalled you agree on a value and they cut a check less the five hundred. If they fix they pay for everything less five hundred.

    Glad you're ok
    Cool dog
    Sorry about your truck
Happy to hear you are covered!

Went in a while back to talk to my insurance agent about dropping from full coverage to basic insurance to squeak a little more cash into the budget and while we were talking he pulled up the blue book on my truck, spun his computer monitor around and said " and if you get hit and totalled by an uninsured driver?"

I thanked him for his time and left it as it is.
    Full coverage, $500 deductible
Damn the premium even with a perfect driving record.

Beyond ridiculous, plus in my state it's more likely than in some others.

If I'm caught driving unregistered or with no license you bet my butt is going to jail

Not to mention the Colorado engine is a piece of junk, mine died in 5 years of light driving..so the frame don't matter if you can't start the engine.

Hey OP-- I have been through similar experiences and can share my outcomes. My 2016 has been rear ended twice, both times it had frame damage. Thankfully the at fault parties were insured. My rear end looked like yours-- both frame rails but downward just behind the bumper. The repairs cost around 8k the first time and 5k the second time, neither were declared a total.
I had the truck repaired both times, then filed an additional Loss of Value claim, had a third party inspector produce a Loss of Value assessment, and received additional compensation based on the assessment.
If the truck isn't totaled the your insurance company elects to repair the vehicle, I would ask them if your comprehensive/uninsured coverage also covers loss of value, and make an additional claim accordingly.
This whole repair and claim process can be a huge PITA, especially if the repair shop is sub-par. Be sure to use a good one, and I would not necessarily go with the shop your insurance company prefers. Also, I would be sure to request that they replace any parts with OEM parts, as they usually try to use non-OEM parts to cut costs.
Good luck! Feel free to PM me to discuss in more detail.
