correcting exposure, contrast, sharpness how you want it to look, after you take the photo in PS or gimp.

your camera doesnt know what you want as far as how your photo should look.

thats when post production comes in.

Raw is the untouched raw data that the image sensor picks up. jpeg doesnt capture those details

these are two photos except one is JPEG fine and one is RAW
    This is my 50mm at f4 1/200 iso 320

ok THE JPG STRAIGHT FROM CAMERA. with in camera settings used
    jpgteddy_464daa3281ddb826be1b259bed3d83b20bafca7a.jpg

    the RAW FILE

    rawteddy_7984bbfcc1ab1745744ae5f54ff770da75945fb3.jpg
it looks bleh but wait theres more

Here is the JPEG CROPPED AT 100% look at the random white lines in the "fur" of the teddy bear. also look at the high grainy-ness/noise in the background on the armrest
    jpegteddyedited_a2ec3d7f99e88418f084e1904a4c3b089bc78349.jpg

this is the RAW EDITED FILE CROPPED AT 100%. look at the fur and how much softer, and more natural the fur looks. and how its not as grainy (i didnt mess with noise reduction)
    rawteddyedited_651f0ba0b25169939a391acd615bf91f346f4a61.jpg

    then the JPEG ZOOMED OUT
    jpgteddy_464daa3281ddb826be1b259bed3d83b20bafca7a.jpg

the RAW RETOUCHED AND ZOOMED OUT
    teddytoucheduncroppedraw1-1_5394c873bf6e99dba2ad21a62a5f5b0cda13d685.jpg

    the raw looks more natural.

basically what im trying to say is shooting in jpeg means you are being lazy and you arent taking you photography seriously. (i dont know if you want to or not) your camera edits how it wants it to look. not how you want it to look. that where raw comes in.

and im not saying youre lazy and im not telling you to shoot in raw but im just showing you the advantages

idk but i actually like the jpeg more, looks like you bumped up the contrast on the last(raw) one

well maybe that photo isnt the best example but you see what i mean. i did the editing in like two minutes in camera RAW in bridge.

hopefully viet or jlee or marlon can step in to kinda show you a little easier

EDIT: and really? the jpeg looks more contasted on my screen.

but we have different moniters im sure that can make that subtle difference

Were just trying to tell you that you will get better photos with Raw files over JEPG. You can alway setup presets in Lightroom and apply them to all your images so your not spending time editing and your images will look better then the JEPG would. With my experience I don't like to shoot in JEPG due to the loss of detail and I don't like the camera to choose how to render the shot. When shooting in JEPG your camera renders the image IE sharping,Contrast & Color something that most JEPG shooters don't ever touch in the settings. I feel shooting in Raw gives me more time to shoot and less changing settings in my camera. The only thing you have to change for the most part is Shutter Speed, f Stop, ISO & White Balance. Your at least controlling your WB & ISO right? please tell me you don't have them set to auto :smack:

I downloaded LR2.7 (since you can only use LR3 on intel based macs  lame) and I don't know what the hell I am doing. How do you even save the photo when you're done working on it:confused:

That's the great thing about Lightroom you don't save anything you can make as many changes as you want and change them back a 1000 times and it's does nothing to the image. All editing in Lightroom is non destructive and you never have to save anything just close lightroom and all your changes will stay. when you are done with the images then you Export them to your computer in whatever format you want. And your Raw image is still the same as it was when you loaded it to the computer.

I use Auto for some things but most of the time I shoot with a custom WB for the lighting I'm using at the time.

I use auto WB, but for the rest I use manual. That's the only way to control your picture without really editing imo.
