Sorry but 170k miles with zero leaks then 3 weeks after switching there's a pretty big leak. That's more than a coincidence. At least more than likely. And if you do some research there's quite a bit of discussion on this topic. I wouldn't have necessarily bought into it before this either. But I do now. Laugh it up. Idc. Yes I can change the seal. That's not the point. Was an additional bit of personal experience I thought might be helpful to someone. Isn't that what this forum is about? Anywho, haters gonna hate I guess.

I too can't see why the "Lubricant" should change the seal of the pan.

If I had to take a flying guess ..... Perhaps the change in type oil caused a difference in sealing and blow by of the rings and wipers on the pistons. Increased pressure in the pan could result if there are problems with the PVC system ??? Just trying to think out of the box.

I’m not trying to give you a bad time. And maybe for some reason the oil is the cause of the gasket failing and leaking. In any event I would at least tighten the pan bolts. Whether it’s the oil or not the gasket has failed. The problem is the gasket!! What caused it is debatable but the leak is due to gasket failure. At this point changing back to the previous oil may or may not fix the problem. No matter what, you need to replace the gasket. Even if changing the oil stops the leak you still need to replace the pan gasket.

Why is everyone shitting in this thread.
Op, I can see how putting in oil with less additives that are supposed to make the gasket swell and stay soft, after using oil with more additives, would cause a leak. I normally try to stick with one brand and type of oil for this reason. Maybe I'm just not as much of a genius as everybody else in here.
Most of the people shitting in here get there oil changed at jiffy lube and will trade their truck in for a nissan leaf next year anyways.

I have learned one thing by reading this thread and that is to never post if you have a problem and you are not knowledgable; this is a forum exclusively for those who know what they are doing.

that just about sums it up. it shouldn't leak no matter what oil. Lets say its due to the change in oil, well, it was close to leaking anyway

Not true GJO. I have mostly life experience, backyard mechanic knowledge and 2 years working with "mechanics" at Uniroyal back when the Browns were good (oh the memories) in other words I'm a novice but over the years this site has been GREAT. Ya gotta take the good and the bad and remember not everything on here is gospel. We're all on the same team here, all Taco lovers, ya gotta expect a little fun being poked around and don't be so easily insulted. Lots and lots of good information here and it won't take you long to know who really knows their stuff on here. Welcome

The op is getting a load of poop from most because he made a statement as if it were fact. It isn’t a fact, nor does it have any validity. He just guessed. Had he asked for people’s thoughts on the cause of the oil leak or asked if people thought the leak could be caused from using a different oil he would have gotten thoughtful reply’s. He basically set himself up to have people dump on him by making dumb statements. I personally think the leak was caused by changes in the earths magnetic field along with a drop in barometric pressure. Or possibly the cause is due to climate change.

So here are the facts. Just to simplify for anyone who needs it

    1) Some high mileage oils have additives that swell seals.

2)Those seals will only stay swollen as long as the hm oil (or another additive to do this) is in the engine.

3)I went 170k miles without seepage/leak. Zero. 3 weeks after switching - bunch of seepage.

You keep saying "seals". Not to split hairs too much but the gasket you're looking at is FIPG (form in place gasket) or silicone. It seals/behaves differently than a regular metal/rubber gasket. Drop the pan, clean and dry the sealing surfaces really good, get your hands on a tube of good quality silicone and lay a nice bead! Don't get too sloppy with it, a little goes a long way. Surfaces have to be clean and dry with no oil residue.

Also there is some wisdom to checking the pcv system to make sure there isnt excessive crank case pressure forcing oil out the seals. With the engine running, take the oil cap off, ziptie a rubber glove over the fill neck and see if it blows up like a balloon. Ideally there should be a small amount of vacuum (sucking the glove down the fill neck)
