    Always to top dot. There is roughly a quart in circulation while the engine is running. Check the dip stick while it is idling and see where the level is on the stick. If it is below the bottom dot while idling, the engine is on the verge of brief periods of oil starvation for bearings, depending on the driving conditions.

    Semi-notorious on the shallow oil pan engines. Due to the pick-up being in the shallowest portion of the lower oil pan.

    Always top dot.
