We are talking about two different things. I understand not going through a small pond, but if your going to try dodge every baby puddle you might as well just stay on the pavement.

I think we can both agree that OP did it wrong from lack of experience. Crawl control was not ment for mud.

And if a flatbed tow truck made it down there to pull him out. how bad of a road could it be?

Wouldnt this be the other way around? The more line you spool out, the smaller the diameter of the spool, so the motor is working at the equivalent of a lower gear ratio.

    Here’s one nobody said yet...

OP- check your exhaust pipes from front to back when cleaning your truck of that fun mud. I drove home to Cali from Texas last winter and took a lot of muddy dirt roads on the way back, putting off cleaning the truck for a bit. When I washed the bottom, the mud on the hot parts of my pipe was almost ceramic, mainly due to it being mostly clay. I couldn't power wash it off from the hotter parts of the pipes, even with heated water and D-limonene (industrial grade concentrated orange oil that is a clay clod dissolver), so I had to chip a bunch of it off with a scraper instead. My pipes still look all rusty for it, but it’s only fired on clay. Too much of that can be a bad thing for your cats I imagine. Have fun cleaning up after your mud wallowing! :)

No. The rear axle can be locked, and force both rear wheels to get power. You can add a locking front diff aftermarket, but they are not available on factory trucks. With an open diff power will go to the wheel with the least traction and leave the one with the most traction to just sit there. Traction control will gently apply the brakes to the one wheel that is spinning. That should force the diff to send power to the one that is not spinning. That is great if you've got one wheel on ice and the other on dry pavement, but not so much in mud. Traction control should be off.

And lo range is not your friend in this situation, at least not in lower gears. I've driven through mud that bad or worse. The idea is to hit it fast with lots of momentum and keep the wheels spinning to throw the mud out of the tires. On any other truck I'd stay in hi range, but since the rear axle can only be locked in lo range I'd use lo range and 2nd or 3rd gear in a Tacoma.

Learning to read the terrain is important. A few feet to the left and I think you'd have made it. The right wheels were in a rut made by someone with taller tires than you. That is what left your frame on the ground. About 10-15 minutes with a shovel to dig out the right side and you might have been able to drive out in reverse.

If you'd tried just a little bit harder Chris, you could have got it REALLY stuck, like this:

Mostly just that the crawl control mode is bullshit... You should have been in 4wd before you hit the hole, and momentum is key to getting through. Once you stop you're done.

I'm sure your truck could have gotten through, you just need to hit it like you mean it.
