Hello TW, I've been looking to upgrade my head unit for a while and after playing with the Pioneer AVH-P8400BH I'm a big fan. However, after looking at crutchfield, I see pioneer now has the AVH-X5500BHS. From what I can tell, they're basically the same HU. Any reason to buy one over the other? I will add that I don't plan on changing out the speakers, for now.

8400 has detachable screen and 5500 has a motorized screen.

Ah I see that, thanks! Hmm, kinda wierd to have different numbers just for a screen difference. Probably gonna do the 5500, don't care to remove the screen.

So it looks like the 8500 adds android capability. Ugh... wonder if it's really worth the extra 200 bucks. God damn pioneer, has 10 of the same Head Units, adds one fuctionality per unit, and charges 100 bucks each upgrade.

Then AVH X3500 and AVH X5500 has android capability as well. the X?500's are the newer models of the ?400's. they are upgraded in software and connectivity, primarily to work with android phones as well as "I" products. that is my understanding anyway. in topic "took the plunge" i will be posting my install of AVH X5500 and how it links with Samsung galaxy S3. should be done with install by the end of next week.

The biggest difference between the 5500 and the 8400 is Android compatibility. I have the 5500 in my Tundra and use it with my Galaxy SIII. With the 8400 you can stream audio from the music player on the phone as well as Pandora but you won't have full control over Pandora on the deck like thumbs up, thumbs down, choosing which stations or play lists you want, etc... With my 5500, it is designed to work with Android so you can do all of that right from the deck. Pioneer's App Radio also works with Android but I don't think the sound quality is as good as the 5500 or the 8400 plus the App Radio doesn't hace a CD player. The 8400 also has the detatchable face but I didn't worry about that since the 5500 looks a lot like a stock nav unit and taking the face off and putting it back on all the time gives more wear and tear to the contact points for the faceplate.

I know this has already been answered but wanted to share that I have seen units have similar model #'s but one would be exclusive to a store like Wal-Mart for example. One may have one minor little difference from the other so they couldn't be price matched against the other. And this isn't just for car stereos, this goes for a lot of products.

See this a lot on black Friday items also.

The biggest difference between the 3500 and the 5500 is that the 3500 has a 6.1 inch screen vs the 7 inch screen for the 5500 and the 3500 only has 2 volt pre outs as opposed to the 4 volt pre outs on the 5500
