I'm installing a brass backflow preventer, a ball shutoff valve and a brass spigot in a pvc sprinkler system and when I looked at recommendations for joining pvc to metal, there are many, many opinions. Consistently, there was "do not use Teflon tape on pvc, it will break it".

One option is a PVC/Brass union, which I do like, but they are $12 each. That's a lot of cheddar when I add it up.

Another oft mentioned option was pipe thread sealant, i.e. Rectorseal T Plus 2. Now, I've used some version of Rectorseal in the past on a different project (and material) and did not have any luck with it. I really don't want to get the system installed and find leaking joints. I'd have to cut out the piece and start over. Not a fan.

Anybody have experience and some advice? There's so much information out there it's just overwhelming.

I've used PVC with Teflon tape many of times on pool fittings. Granted they were 1 1/2", but never any issues. Probably wouldn't hurt to use tape and Rectoseal together. Tape it and throw a coat of the dope on there. I've been using the Hercules Megatape from Lowe's and like it. I installed several fittings when I did my water heater and did the tape/dope method and it worked well. Granted it was all brass/copper, but with PVC it shouldn't matter. I always use the yellow Rectoseal #5, I never fool with the white paste. Just watch how many wraps of tape you use on the PVC. 4-5 should be plenty for regular tape, and 3ish for thick tape.
