I have been posting a lot in the 3rd gen forum thinking I would get a 3G here soon. After test driving the 3.5 auto and not being too impressed with it, I decided to go for this DCLB Sport with only 26,000 miles on in. I have faith in the 4.0 given it's long track record of reliability. The 3.5 seems to have some bugs it needs worked out.
I am coming from a 2002 OR manual transmission so it will be different driving an auto again but so far I am really pleased with how the DCLB rides.
I tow a 3,000 lb Casita trailer that you can see on my profile pic to the left, so I am glad I have to tow package. Hoping my 2013 will tow it a little better than my 2002.

Goodbye, old Taco. I will miss you, but you will make someone else happy now.

I was planning on buying a 3rd gen also... when I drove one, I was not happy with the 3.5 and the auto trans... ended up finding a 09 with 57k miles... i like the 2nd gen power train much better than the 3rd gen..

My sentiments too. I would much prefer the gen 3 interior and gadgets but man, from a dead stop the 3.5 has no pull. I was either lugging at 1,000 rpm or reving the piss out of it at 5,000 RPM. Not much in between. Not to mention all of the issues with the transmission programming, AT fluid being low, rear-diff howl, hood-glue issues, etc. The gen 3 forum is a dumping ground for pissed off customers at the moment. I know a lot of that is first-year growing pains but a 2G Tacoma seems like such a safer bet.

FWIW the 1GR-FE still appears to be the available V6 in the 2017 Hilux. It's a great motor that Toyota has a lot of trust in apparently. That backed by a transmission designed to sit behind a V8 and you've got a pretty great combo. Enjoy the truck!

The 2GR is a gutless steaming pile compared to the 1GR.

    Congrats.

Same here. I was dead set on a 3rd gen TRD O/R but seeing all the issues I went with a 2nd gen. Bought this:

Congrats! Nice truck and I think you'll be happy with the 2nd Gen's towing capability. I tow a 3,000lb trailer a few times a month and have no complaints what so ever. MPG's suffer of course but that shouldn't be surprising pulling a trailer.

These trucks are super solid. Enjoy!:benchpress:

    Too few to list.
If you're gonna tow, you might want to upgrade the rear springs. Lots of peeps going sumo springs for additional support.

Congrats and good choice on the purchase. I bought virtually the exact same truck back in March. Towing 3k pounds won't be an issue since you have the factory tow package.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
    Good buy!

You should talk to @SMKYTXN about the aspherical mirrors he sells.

I went from an 02 trd 5 sp to an 05 trd auto. Havent had much experience with the 3rd gen but buddy of mine is toyota mastertech and he wasnt impressed.
The auto isnt too bad especially in traffic, plus my miata is a 6sp. Nice truck, good luck with it.
