I just picked up a base model '17 SR a couple weeks ago and was in the same situation you are in now. Couldn't decide between the 2.7L or the 3.5L. Either way I definitely wanted a manual, 4x4, and 6' bed. After lots of back and forth I decided to go with the 2.7L. Deep down all I wanted was a tough and dependable truck and not all the comforts and add-ons offered on the higher trim models. I am more than pleased with my decision and love the 4 cylinder. Plenty of power for my needs which include driving to work, taking trash to dump, and hauling odds & end supplies.

Loving our SR AC 4x4 5spd 4 banger!
Ya you have to downshift to get up a mountain...so does most everything else except unloaded diesel trucks!
Added intermittent wipers. Had the convenience package as only option. (cruise and keyless entry).
Hard to get...but worth the trouble.

There are non around here. But I'm not in a hurry, I might order one if I can. I'll also start looking further than the local dealers.

He wants a Manual no matter what, SR5 is Auto only!

Yeah, I want a manual no matter what. That might cut the SR5 off the list, but not the V6 DCSB. I also prefer the long bed, which makes the I4 SR even more appealing. I wish I could tell ya I'd get the V6. But even though I can pay for it, I just don't want to. I'd much rather save a little this time than splurge. At the end of the day, it's a small difference in a monthly payment, but it adds up.

If you're shopping for a manual, it's about a $6-7K difference to get the V6.

Yeah, but it I jump all the way up to the V6 I'm going to want the TRD OFF ROAD to get the locker at that point. I priced the I4 SR at $26,000. I think the TRD OFF ROAD manual DCSB is going to be more like $33,000. :/ Yeah, that's $7K. But still. It's more tax too, another $525... more in insurance... etc, etc. It adds up. Ugh. Tough decision.

Love my SR AC 5MT Utility 2.7. Everyone told me I would be a fool to get the 2.7 over the V6 but I knew where I would be driving it and the 2.7 is perfect for me. I drive winding country roads and in town with little highway. To go up to a V6 with MT I would have had to spend $8000 more and I wasn't willing to do that. I'm glad I didn't.

    I get 20-21mpg.

I love my I4 5MT. It's been from Montana to the tip of Baja and back. Some passes require 3rd gear, but it still trucks along just fine.

^^^ Love that photo. It actually kind of reminds me about why I want the less expensive I4. I want to get back to having time off and surfing. Lately I've been over-stressed, working my a$$ off. I'm simplifying. Getting rid of a lot of things and changing many other things. Saving $7 or $8k really is a big deal to me right now.

Dang nice. I need a hard camper shell for my uses, but still. Very nice. I've never been fan of the front grille on these new trucks... I still prefer the front end of my two other Tacos, but the rest of the truck makes up for it. Specially the interior.

Be careful with a hard shell cap when you start adding weight in the 4cyl its quite noticeable. <-- Reason I sold my shell.

AFE intake lets me use the 1800-2300rpm range and I have a yakama rocket box on my bed. This makes it glide at around 65-70. I try to stay speed limit as well.

Sorry for the reply on this thread...
