I test drove a 2015 Colorado for 6 months. You see what I drive now.

Nah, my 06 Colorado puked the head in 2012. The dealer and corporate lied to me 6 ways to Sunday and a free repair cost me almost 2 grand. Look up the TSB on those that they had to do.

the purpose of the vehicle needs to fix the intention of the vehicle.
(buying a long range rifle to go hunt birds would be pointless and even counter productive)
That being said I've had a Colorado and now a Taco both were 2005 and for what I need/want in a truck the taco is a much better fit.
The aftermarket support is also much better for Tacos, try finding aftermarket Colorado bumpers

I say drive the one you like to sit in and like to look at. Life is too short to have a truck that doesn't make you smile. No matter if that is a Tacoma or a Canyon. My other vehicle is a Tahoe, that one makes me smile too.

Once you exceed 100k miles, the biggest impact on longevity and reliability is how well you maintained your vehicle from the get go. If you're diligent in routine maintenance and scheduled maintenance, there's no reason either truck won't last 200k.

The GMC will hold it's value better than the chevy because GMC only makes trucks and suv's and is a step up in the GM family. But the Toyota has much better resale down the road. But everyone is forgetting, the man said he planned on keeping the truck for a long time and putting 200K on it before he replaces it, so no truck is going to give you much resale once the odometer hits 200k. If he can buy the GMC for less money now, who cares if he gets a little more at the end on trade in. I bought a Toyota over the GMC because I liked the looks and I don't keep a vehicle long at all, so the Toyota will be better trading in with say 40K miles compaired to the GMC with the same age and miles. I sell the GMC trucks, and yes they are nice and do ride a little better, but if he likes the GMC better, under his situation, he should buy the GMC!

Get the one you like. We all have a different take on that. I drove several Colorados before deciding on my Tacoma. I liked the sound system, seating position, and internal box size of the Chev over the Taco. I liked the ride, fit and finish, and style of the Taco better. I'm shocked that people think the Colorado rides better, but like I said it's basically very subjective. Don't sweat the resale.

    Swap the $35 & 40K.

When I was looking at the two a couple months ago, the Canyon was MSRP'ing about $3k lower than a similarly equipped Taco, *and* dealers were easily offering $6k+ off MSRP vs the difficult to achieve $3k off MSRP on the Taco.

So yes, the GM will be worth less in a few years, but it also started out lower to begin with.

Really the buyer needs to consider why they want the truck and which better fits the needs. The more expensive Taco better fit *mine* and thus that's what I bought.

Nope. At that point the differences will be pretty minor.

Resale only really comes into play if your needs change or you didn't buy the right truck to fit your needs to begin with.

In 2009, I bought a used, one owner, Silver 2005 TRD Off Road Tacoma Access Cab with 39,000 miles for $15,750.... Sold it (private sale) 4 months ago with 124,000 miles for $12,400. Insane re-sale value on Tacos. Not even close with a Canyon or Colorado.
Replaced my '05 with a brand new '16 TRD Sport DCSB (Silver once again).

Wow, do some research, completely different than back then...

    2016 Tacoma:

    Resale Value
    • at 36 months: 72.9%
    • at 60 months: 61.7%
    2016 Canyon:
    • at 36 months: 70.7%
    • at 60 months: 59.5%
OP, the GM twins are a great choice. They have had some teething problems just like the Tacoma's but they also have a proven drivetrain. The 3.6 and 6 speed has been in millions of vehicles. They have some more room in the back seat (2-3 inches I believe?) and ride nicer and are more refined. They are great at being trucks. Since you are mostly on road and will keep it a long time if you keep with the maintenance they would be a great choice. Tacoma is too but I lean GM as they have never let me down.

They aren't horrible off road either just a little behind the Tacoma's. The G80 is a great asset in many instances. Good luck...

I have the 16 Colorado diesel. It is very nice. Have had it for 7 months and now 21400 miles on it. I had a 16 Tacoma sport dbl cab 4x4 and couldn't get seat position comfort to work for me. I can tell you in my opinion the diesel power train is smoother than the Tacoma. I will say I think the Tacoma has nicer interior materials and I like the interior layout and looks better in the Tacoma also. Off road Tacoma was much better. As far as ride the Colorado is smoother on normal roads that have imperfections and the Taco is just smooth if smooth roads and both quite interiors. The Taco is rougher when you go over roads not so smooth. I averaged 20.3 mpg in my mixed driving in the Tacoma and I am averaging 30.1 in the Colorado. All said it is preference in my opinion and id get what is comfortable and what best fits you. Colorado has more room and not so cramped feeling but the Tacoma was more than fine for me and my wife. Just came down to seat comfort or id have the Tacoma still. I did recently test drive the Honda and must say it is better than both if not towing more than 4k and not going off roading. I have been looking at adding another Tacoma just for off road and fun and was keeping my Colorado but I may get the Ridgeline and trade in the Colorado and get the Tacoma to fix up for off road trails and split some miles. My bass boat isn't heavy so that is most id ever tow. I just like going off road and running trails and do like going fishing in remote areas that are hard to get to but 95% of my time is on the streets commuting and taking traveling taking our Bikes and hiking.

Totally different? They haven't been out long enough to even establish resale value on the new models.

But just like other GMs, it won't be good. Toyota has been holding some of the best resale for years and years. The canyon or colorado isn't going to change that.

You are correct, the new Canyon and Colorado are closing in on resale value too, looks like its down to 3 and 4 percent now.

I agree on don't sweat resale. Get what you like. I think the Tacoma rides better off road and smooth hyw but Colorado better on rougher streets but not enough difference in my opinion and pick what you like. As I stated I had a 16 Taco and had to sale because seating position and I couldn't get comfortable but liked everything else better except I like the diesel power train is smoother. Gas to gas I think they are equal.
