Can't go wrong with a Tacoma. I have over 90k on my 2017 DCSB MT and it has been a awesome truck so far with many smiles per miles left. I am going full-size next, but years away.

I was in similar shoes in late 2016 when I purchased this truck vs a used 2014/2015 vs my then new 2017. I am glad a went with the new gen and I believe you will be as well. Do it!

Do you consider the 4 cylinder 2/3 gen less reliable than the 6? Also, the new turbo motor will be spinning LESS rpms than the 3.5/4.0 to make the same power. That's the beauty of a turbo.

The 4 cylinder in the 2/3 gen is one of the best motors toyota ever made.

I'd go as far to say that it is a better motor than the 3.5 v6 car motor in the 3g when you consider all the BS with needing new gears from the factory and that auto that needs tuned.

The 4.0 is dead nuts reliable but it gets mpg like a v8 but doesnt have the power. Even a supercharger cant get it to 300hp.

The 2trfe 4 cylinder wont like towing at all but it can do it begrudgingly.

Once you put the LCE header and manifold spacer on the 4cylinder it gets 25-26 mpg with 33's on it too.

If you've had any of these trucks and then drive a 4g, you will understand that they made this truck for you- anything you didnt like about a previous gen has been addressed in this one.

The 4th gen's just like driving every other gen tacoma, only downhill.

The previous gen Tacomas are all amazing trucks, head and shoulders above most other manufacturers, so it's hard for people to imagine they could make it better.

Most if not all of the people that have actually paid for one seem to think they did though.

Yeah, the 4 cylinder in the 2nd/3rd gen is even more reliable than the 6-cylinder. Simpler engine, no dual banks with different valve trains, etc. It just doesn't get as much attention among enthusiasts (on TW forums, etc.) because it makes a lot less power.

IMO there's really not much reason to have a V6 (aside from the vroom-vroom / "wow-so-cool!" factor) unless you regularly want to tow 3K lbs and up -- and even then, that's only if you live in a hilly-to-mountainous part of the country.

Yes! Power is an issue for sure.

It's like youre driving the truck as fast as it can go just to keep up with traffic.

But! You don't ever have to worry about accidently getting a speeding ticket with it!

    This.

It's crazy that adding a $7,000 supercharger to the V6 4.0L 1GR-FE only adds around 50-60 HP. Less than 25% total HP gain. That's why I've never strongly considered adding one.

You get more smiles per dollar adding a SC or turbo to the 4 cylinder. 275 hp or something?

And I don't know this from personal experience but I've heard that the SC'd 2TR gets 30 MPG

I mean they could've just Supercharged the 2TRFE and stuck that in the 4G- I don't know why they didnt just do that, they are still using this motor all over the world

You'd be pumping a lot more power through the engine. At the very least, you'd want better bearings.

But they don't have the turbos, hybrids/batterys, imax screens, lane assist, brake assist, sensors for cafe, and all the electronics and unneeded stuff on them. Start replacing those outdated components after the warranty is up and get back with us on the cost.

I put together a little pro/con list vs prior gen… you can get them with $3k + discounts currently, I think that’s reasonable and you’ll get a reliable truck for the foreseeable future. Yea, we don’t know true reliability of this truck that we’ll have in 5+ years but Toyota has a history of engineering the right things to be reliable and until we start to see different i’m giving them the benefit of the doubt.

truck: ‘24 trd or dclb bronze oxide, jbl speaker, sliding window, bed wiring, 14’’ screen

I’ve owned two third gen Tacomas, dcsb and dclb

    Pro:
    - Fuel economy consistently between 22/23 this was validated with the Fuelly app
    - Bed is noticeably deeper when hauling loads -holds more goodies
-amazing over washboard, I live in the sticks and this is a big plus compared to my previous sport trims
    -good visibility
-quiet on road, no squeaks, no rattles (just the 4 banger lol)
-engine and transmission are light years ahead of 3rd gen
-head lights are nice, visibility is great
-grille proportions closer to 2nd gen is big plus for me and I really like the fogs(I know, subjective)
    -light tailgate is nice
    -comes with Toyota branded gasshole(lol)
    -door pockets are great
-rear seat room better than my 3g - 14 and 8 year olds fit no problem
-phone charging setup orientation works well
-Plastics feel durable, parting line flash minimal and fit are good
-flat surface for arm to rest on when window rolled down is great
-under seat space large and open
    -headspace improved
    -seating position improved
-longer wheelbase is noticeable, I like the driving characteristics and proportions, the short beds seem smaller than before but I don’t have measurements to support that, maybe one of you does

    Cons:
-gas tank small for someone like me who drives 2k miles a month, it seems like they went full in on the psychology of people and their wallets. Even with gas close to $4/gal it’s in the $50 some dollar range to fill - think this keeps negativity about fuel costs down and starts to condition people to the normalization of 250-300 miles of range in advance of more ev rollouts
-Toyota’s infotainment is still meh, but better than last gen and 4Runner, the maps have grown leaps and bounds better
-audio is decent enough but my civic with the Bose sound system was better. Point being is at the price point it should beat the civic
-rear window smaller, prefer previous style(personal preference)
-rear window control trigger is puny, should have incorporated this feature into the silver triggers by the hvac instead of up by the drivers overhead cabin lights
-don’t get the defroster coils in rear window, I’ve lived in the northeast winters forever and this has literally not once ever been an issue on a vertical truck window. Like ever.
-paint is thin, already have a chunk out of the hood and peoples doors have nicked the doors up (ffs why do I park in left field and this still happens? lol…) but, to be fair, end of winter stone situation in my area is rough
-not sure about long term durability of the shiny colored plastic on dash in front of passenger seat but verdict is out
-digital gauge cluster is ok, can be busy and why can’t the cruise control icon be hidden when it’s off?? My civic had an impeccably designed digital cluster
-light color cloth on seats is dumb(3g issue in some cases too), why put an easy to stain cloth on a high traffic surface?
-Toyotas oem all weather mats are terrible from a coverage perspective, once tuxmat has options available I’ll be getting those!

idk what else, I’m sure I’ll remember more when I get in it haha, if you have questions feel free to ask[/QUOTE]

    1. In my area, no 3rd gen is available in trd OR for less than 38k with 36k or more on the odo. If you find one, it has a salvage title.

    2. You freely admit we won’t know the 4th 2.4 turbo reliability for many years but you are negative about it. So you are speculating with zero actual data. I know, it’s the thing to do on the interwebs.

    3. Turbo 4 is making much more torque at lower 1700 rpm so working less to do the same job. But again, your recipe is old school, this is a new type of cooking that may very well taste better.

    4. At the very least, Toyota talked about what they did to make it as reliable and durable as the prior generation. They made actual changes to keep the heat down, so it’s a good start, imo.

    5. I didn’t drop 55k, I dropped 38k, does that make a difference to you? It does to me. For 3k more than the cheapest 2021 Tacoma OR with 36k miles on it, I got a new one. A solid deal, imo.

I have the jbl, the sound quality is decent but I had a civic with the Bose sound system before and thought that one sounded better… I would like to be able to adjust the jbl sound because it’s very center focused towards the removable speaker. That being said, after a day or two of adjustment I didn’t even notice.

No quality issues really, I live down a come back roads and the rock situation isn’t friendly to my vehicles so there are some chips but nothing more than I also get in the 4Runner, no cel issues, I was kind of worried about the grille shutter issue some people had but I haven’t had that issue yet. I just had the 5k service done this week.

edit: spec on my 3g: ‘18 dcsb was sport with the least amount of packages you could get, my ‘22 dclb was a loaded sport

Another 2nd gen best gen post … sigh. Does it ever get old? Let the man enjoy his new truck like you’re enjoying yours.

Imagine if he went into the 2nd gen forum and talked about how shitty the 5 speed autotragic is…
how lethargic coarse and slow the 4.0 is …
How it gets v10 MPGs and returns sub modern 4 cylinder power …
how the truck doesn’t even have a back up cam…
how you have to use an archaic KEY to start the damn thing …
how the brakes in the back date back to 1890 farm technology …
    how the frames rust …

yea would be quite weird. Yet here we are

It can be a horrible thing having the world go by you and going about their business enjoying themselves oblivious to your presence. Speaking from personal experience being older than dirt, I am with you brother. Good thing you choose to make the whole world know of your existence in such a productive way. Rock on.
