Hi guys! First post here.. Ive been thinking about buying a 3rd gen tacoma for some time now. Im currently in a 17 civic ex sedan and I love it but life is changing and I feel like a truck is more for me. Im curious as to what the average fuel mileage everyone is getting? I have a 40 mile round trip all highway commute M-F. I'm thinking about purchasing a double cab v6 4x4 sr5 or TRD sport trim. Headroom is another factor since I'm 6ft tall, also hows the new fuel system they have in the trucks? Overall I'm just looking for opinions on how everyone likes daily driving the truck and if they'd purchase again. Thanks!

I’m 6’2” and headroom is fine. Gas mileage is fine too, it’s a truck.

Test drive, test drive, and test drive.
MPG’s will largely depend on your driving habits. If your comparing current MPG’s to a Tacoma, a Prius might be your best bet. Best wishes on your new vehicle quest.

I'm 6' and have plenty of head room. I've heard of people complain about headroom when they have a sunroof but not much without. I do about 80 miles round trip for work and it gets so so gas mileage, I tend to fill up 2 times a week, including weekend driving. I enjoy the truck and it does what I need.

Should be around 21 mpg, nice trucks. 2020 tacoma will have power drivers seat so that should help with the taller people.

    Welcome!

You won't like the mileage coming out of a civic. You will love the space and functionality of a truck though. Sport might be better suited to longer commutes, but that's just my personal opinion

Edit: I am 6 ft tall, and I have a sunroof, and plenty of space, but I push my seat almost all the way back, and then recline a bit. Makes for a tiny backseat

Edit: oh yeah, and get a manual, way more fun to drive

I would not buy a 3rd Gen. They have a lot a problems and the gas mileage is not that great. You will be disappointed.

Have you ever owned a pickup truck before?

A pickup is basically a utility vehicle, despite the marketing.

Test drive, test drive, test drive, and think about it for awhile.

    Then test drive some more.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

And for the record I have liked my 2016 truck since I bought it new. No need for tsb's or aftermarket tunes for me.

MPGs suck with the 3rd gen imo. Slow and sluggish truck with stock tuning. Can’t seem to move out of its own way.

Great truck. Lots of power, good MPGs if you know how to drive. Some fellas just don’t have a lot of experience behind the wheel of a pickup so they get easily disappointed. They tend to aggregate here, so be warned.

Get an extended or overnight test drive to make sure you like it, in my experience the 3rd Gen seems to do around 2 MPG or so better than the previous 2nd Gen's.

Recently just got my taco this july myself and honestly i havent looked back. I got the sport trim since i live in the city and i did test drive other trims but the sport seem more suited since itll be driven on asphalt like 98% of the time (+snow). I drive close to ur commute everyday and i happen to fill up maybe every 1.5 weeks or so, as long as gas prices are reasonable hah...
But honestly i love it, its super comfortable, i DD it everyday. Best upgrade from my little sports cars lol those were wayyy more gas guzzlers

I really like my 2019 V6. I have the SR model with the SX package. Other than the keyless entry I have upgraded the few differences between the SR and SR5 for minimal expense, yet significant initial cost saving between SR and SR5. Can't address the sport as I was looking more towards utility type uses (hauled 230 fence boards today np) . Driving up I-5 a couple weeks ago got 25 mpg. I do let off on the gas when I see traffic slowing down or a light a block ahead changing to red as opposed to some who zoom up there only to have to do a brake stomp. So much nicer than any other truck I have had, not as fun to drive as my 2003 Acura CL 6 spd was but that's not why I got a truck. There are a lot of helpful tutorials and advice on here and yes some whining about transmissions mostly in the 2016-17 models. GL with whatever you decide.

See if you can find a place to rent the truck and keep it for a couple of days. I went from a Civic to the Tacoma as well. Only thing I hate is the gas mileage but that's mainly due to my driving style.

When I was serious about getting the truck I came on here and started researching. That was about 1.5 to 2 years ago. So when I went to look and test drive I was expecting to drive a piece of crap truck, funny enough I enjoyed/enjoy it and none of the stuff most people on here complained about bothered me.

So most definitely recommend you test drive the heck out of it and make sure the gas mileage is something you can deal with. I drive city one way to work and then take the freeway on the way home. I get roughly 15-16 mpg. When it is exclusively freeway I usually get around 20-22 mpg. Cant help with the height thing since I'm short.

Going from Civic you will be a little disappointed in the fuel mileage but it's a truck. I currently average about 19 mpg with 80% being hwy.

I highly recommend several test drives and see if they will allow a overnight or weekend test drive.

Previous v6 4x4 and overall avg mpgs mid 23's. Have a 4 cyl now and haven't been below 25 mpg's. 6'1" and can wear a hat..plenty of head room. For some reason I drive like an old man. Your milage may vary. Great trucks
