    1. these are your top 10? what about LMT, LWRC, Bravo Company, Noveske?

    2. No, they are not all milspec...the only Mil spec you listed is Colt then DD is a close second. but for 95% of shooters that wont matter anyways...

Unless you plan on taking Carbine courses and running a few thousand rounds through your gun a month/week....rock river, dpms, bushmaster, ruger would all be fine for range shooting, plinking, hunting. if you do want to take courses and run your gun hard then check the links i posted above

My LMT upper alone was $600 w/o BCG. Buy the LMT. It's a top tier company.

Sure. lmt, lwrc. Whatever. I was just throwing some affordable rifles out there. Like I said...Chevy/ford, pc/mac whatever. To him it's not going to matter whether it's a mil spec rifle, sound like he just wants a plinker.

Great suggestion, but not easily done for the first time AR buyer. There's so many options out there it would be frustrating for someone who has never done it before to know what they want.

Not really sure you can compare an LMT/LWRC to bushmaster or Rock River Arms...not all AR's are made equal dude

I would look into a complete rifle then; the best thing to do would be go to a local gun shop and put your hands on one to see what you like and how they feel. Might be you don't like them at all and you prefer an AK, who knows but you ;)

I lifted this from another site I frequent....
"Buy an AR15" is a bit different than "buy a M4 clone." They are two different models, and the features are significant in utility and price.

I would urge getting a fixed stock A3 flattop with handguards. It is more user friendly, and suffers less from market demand. The biggest differences are the stock and quad rail. Adjustable stocks aren't a big priority unless you shoot with body armor one time, then not. You can maintain the same relative cheek weld with the necessary length of pull change. For the average shooter, that's a rare situation.

The quad rail offers a lot of versatility to mount things, but the negatives are rarely mentioned. Most shooters find the upper rail on the receiver sufficient for an optic. Using the handguard rails to mount things makes the carbine nose heavy, then some add a vertical grip to hoist it up, and ladders to cover the cheese grater rails for comfort. Two pounds more weight, and it's no longer fun to shoot, but it sure looks cool with another $500 worth of stuff out there.

That's a lot of ammo, or even the price of a really good red dot. All that stuff still won't make it shoot better than the government spec, 2MOA. Only a good barrel will do that.

For defensive purposes, the AR will do. That role is also filled by handguns, shot guns, lever actions, and quite a few other types over the last 50 years. All those people thought their choice was just as good, and when things happen, it seems to prove out that being confident in using the weapon counts for as much as what it is.

Military specs are nice, keep in mind, the military plans to shoot a lot of automatic fire, which is hard on weapons, and doesn't have the benefit of a Customer Service mailing address to send things. Once accepted by their inspectors, they have to service it and live with it. MPI inspecting each bolt is really nice, but it's expensive - and for the casual shooter, needs to be weighed on a gun that may never shoot as many rounds in it's life as a military carbine would in a year. Frankly, cheap surplus magazines cause more trouble. Don't skimp on magazines, buy the best, and you've sidelined most of the trouble with the AR right there.

Have fun sorting it all out, don't let the marketing hype get to you. There are actually people out there who sell a lot of sizzle, but you don't get much steak. If anything, the more tactical and hardcore, the more cautious I would be.

    And another

A simple AR of good quality would be an A2 or A3 - fixed stock with handguards. The Brownells' gunbuilder is a great toy to play with, but until specific uses are nailed down, it usually results in an internet tacticool gamers gun, anything but simple.

Look at what features you need (not want): Adjustable stock? they cost twice as much minimum, don't offer a verified improvement in accuracy, if anything, they rattle, squeak, can slip the notch and fail, expose the buffer tube to damage, and only work if you need to wear body armor.

Quad rails are nice, usually free floated, weigh more than handguards, offer 4 feet of picitinny rail, and aren't user friendly, so ladder guards go on, weighing them down more. Add a scope, light, VFG/bipod, side sling mount, pressure switches, you get a nice entry team carbine that's optimized for storming mud huts and motel rooms. Don't forget the black balaclava. If you only practice in tire houses, all will be well, but none of that will help make a 200m shot in the dead of winter (except maybe the balaclava to keep your nose warm.) The simple A3 would do better with a 4X scope.

It's good to keep it simple, the latest fads and fantasies are basically a game of oneupmanship and credit rating for male enhancement. Simple is better, a Bargain Bin rifle could serve well with the difference in price spent on the thousands of rounds planned. Once it begins to show need for improvement, time will have passed and all the research will become clearer as to what and why things are done in certain ways. It takes owing and shooting one to understand the nuances and separate the marketing hype from the day to day reality.

I have a pretty good idea of what I want.

A3 style upper with the carry handle on the rail
    Quad rail
I like the look of the adjustable stocks but don't really care if it is adjustable or not
    5.56 NATO camber
Chrome lined barrel & (shit I forgot what the other part was called lol)
    ----------------------------------------------------
Things that would probably come after the purchase:

    Rubber Hogue Grip
    front vertical grip
Not sure what kind of optic I want just yet
    Quadrail light/ maybe laser combo
Not sure about the laws on Supressors but would be neat to have one lol

I would go with option number two in your first post then, it's seems like the best bang for you buck (pun intended) and for the future of the gun.

If you plan on adding an optic I would look at a flat top reciver. mounting optics on a carry handle puts them very high, too high for some people.
5.56 rounds are good but more expensive than .223 most of the time.
My rock river has whats called a "wylde" chamber, which will shoot .223 and 5.56

Wow, I can see where people are going to take what you wrote the wrong way.

Here is the section on chambers, it makes sense and should be read.
