There are many good manufacturers available but Bushmaster AR's come standard w/a chrome lined barrel and are mil spec. That is why I purchased a Bushmaster myself and love it. From what I've seen many of the other manufacturers offer chrome moly barrels which are cheaper to make but if you don't plan on putting a large number of rounds through it or if you can even afford that many rounds then save a little green and purchase one w/a chrome moly barrel and apply that $ else where. A chrome lined barrel is better for longevity. Just check all your options.

You also need to consider if you are not familiar with an AR and how to CLEAN it properly which can be a PITA until you learn it. The key to having a functional AR is keeping it CLEAN! You may want to consider a gas piston operated type AR that has been proven to be a more reliable system and easier to clean than the standard gas operating system. Just food for thought!

I semi-built these for about 1,100.00 each and they are as "top-tier" as any IMHO. Well the 16inch costs more that 1,100 now after scope, handguard, comp and trigger. But I got tired of sharing it with my girlfriend at the range so I had to build her one for herself, thus the 14.5 with pinned FH was born.

-$860.00 Noveske N-4 14.5 inch pinned MOE upper CHF chrome lined 1-7 barrel-promo currently comes with free cosmetic blemish 2nd lower receiver
    -$50.00 ffl fees
-$40.00 White Oak Armament lower parts kit-no grip
-$56.00 true mil-spec buffer tube kit with H-2 buffer and spring
-$56.00 MagPul MOE stock and grip
    -$30.00 misc shipping
    Total-$1,092.00

I have an ASAP, you don't need to mount one, you could skip the MOE furniture, and use standard-save 40.00. you could get a cheaper buffer tube kit, save 17.00. You could choose another upper receiver group and buy you own lower receiver, maybe save 200.00 bucks there-for example, Bravo Co. makes good stuff-375.00 for upper assembly, 150.00 for BCG/handle, etc.

Assembling a lower receiver is fairly simple, there are many sources of info/instructions on the web and all that is needed are simple hand tools. All I am saying is that you should take some time to look around...you would not after all buy 2011 double cab tacoma with only a 3 inch spacer lift on 285s straight from a dealer for over $40,000 now would you?? You may be suprised what your 1,000 could buy you, or even 1,100.00:)

No one makes a true commercial mil spec rifle. Not even colt. There might be parts on the rifle including the phosphate manganese coatings, trigger groups, bolt carriers and such but non are completely 100% milspec.

    No.
Mil spec is all hype. I repeat "There are no commercial 100% milspec rifles on the market".
All of the guns I listed from those manufacturers have some degree of "mil spec" to them. If I worded it wrong and you didn't fully understand what I meant, then I apologize.

In the best case, it means that all the parts in the rifle's assembly are either actual G.I. parts (modified as required by BATF for semi-auto where necessary), or "virtually" the same, and, that they were assembled in a manner consistant with those levels of quality equal to, or better, than that found in "contract" rifles. By parts that are "virtually" the same, I mean made by the same contractor, the same way, as the mil part.
In the worst case, it's pure hype.
Normally, it's in between these two.
In virtually every case, a part made by a G.I. contractor is vastly superior to a part made by a non-contractor. Many part suppliers/rifle builders/manufacturers actively seek out "cheaper" parts supliers in lieu of the current, higher priced contractors.
We see lots of crapola parts in rifles sent to the shop for repair. Lots. However, current Armalite and Bushmaster rifles are typically just fine, though in serious need of lubrication--but that's another story!
    Hope this helps!

    Back on topic.
I still think the OP (based off his knowledge of weapons) would be content with just picking up a run of the mill $900 AR15 and being totally happy with it, whichever manufacturer he chooses.
Let us know what you get OP!

Oh...the post I read was dated 8-5-09. I think lmt is now added to the official TDP for the military.
