That was part of the problem. Condition was too good to beat on daily, but not nice enough to go into the keeper collection.

I put nearly $10K into her just getting the mechanicals back to 100% and to fix up a few minor cosmetic flaws.

My '97 CE is in as-new condition. That's why I can't drive her.

Go to the 80 section and the diesel section on IH8MUD and do some digging. Hundreds of threads on the topic.
I would advise against starting a new thread.

I don't think swapping will make any sense from a purely financial perspective, UNLESS you can source a great condition 80 with bad motor for super cheap as a starting point. It's not something I've ever really looked into. I think most do it for the torque or range or just to be different. The stack of dollars this type of work will require will not be insignificant.

Yet another vehicle I’ve been looking at for my wife is a 3rd gen 4Runner..
They’re lighter and more fuel efficient, and she likes them a lot.
Do any of those come equipped with multiple lockers? Or additional equipment that would make them more desirable than 1st gen Tacoma’s?

I don’t have photos but maybe this video helps. https://youtu.be/R0Kfk4tTSjs

If you turn the locker knob make sure the light comes on in the dash. My land cruiser had lockers so i didn’t dig into the mechanical differences and details too much as there was no need. But there should be an extra wire that goes to the front and rear diff

A 3rd Gen 4runner is a solid rig, but really doesn't have any more room than your double cab. Some of them came with a rear locker, but I don't know the particular options or packages by heart. My two favorite models are the 96-97 with the 3rz and 5 speed, and the 01-02 limited with the multi mode transfer case.

    Ok folks!
So I’m new to luxury SUV’s and had not seen one of these until now. At least not that I noticed
I just saw what at first glance looked like an 80’s series Land Cruiser, it was actually a Lexus LX 450. It looks like the same truck!

I read a short article about them and it said that the lx 450 is basically a luxury edition Land Cruiser.
Is that true? And to what degree?

I love the brawny look of the 97’ cruiser and the 97’ lx 450 looks damn near identical.

Does the Lexus lx 450 also boast the same indestructiblity And off-road prowess as the 80’s cruisers with more creature comforts? Or is it just a look alike with none of the legendary capabilities of the 80’s cruiser?

    ???

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
same thing with more stock luxuries, LX offered the cell phone option whereas Toyota did not. Same engine, same lockers, same toughness.

    Indeed.

I believe the slee guide has a complete run down, but the list of differences as I remember them is:

    1. Only 96 and 97
    2. Sub woofer in center console instead of having a cubby
    3. Remote mounted CD changer in the back of the center console.
    4. plastic body cladding
    5. higher grade leather on the seats
    6. Auto climate control
    7. built in phone
    8. window tint may be different
    9. Wheels are a slightly different style
    10. proprietary color schemes

I never liked the exterior plastic body trim on the LX450's.

If I wind up with an lx 450 all the exterior plastic will be removed promptly

So as far as the 80 series land cruisers and the Lexus LX 450 go..

I know the holy grail ones have 3 locking differentials but what about the other ones? Do they have NO lockers or are they offered with 1 or 2 lockers?

Keep in mind, those plastic pieces mount via holes in the body, so those holes will be exposed if you do so.

Does the Lexus LX450 have the same code for the locked version as land cruiser?

There is one web site that any 80 or 100 series owner needs to know to save your wallet. If you manage your purchases and combine parts orders, you can save $100s or $1,000s on a big project.

    Bookmark this link: https://partsouq.com/

If you take your time and look around down south, you can find a rust free Hundy with ~200k miles for well under $5,000.

Then you have something nice and solid to build on with some cool enhancements.

I like 80s, but a rust free example around here to start building is way more than I will have in the Hundy after every enhancement that I want.

    upload_2020-10-13_8-25-10.jpg

Give it a Harrop eLocker in the front. The rear LSD still works on mine. At some point I'll in another Harrop for the rear to be triple locked.

    upload_2020-10-13_8-28-32.jpg

Then some low maintenance SCS F5 wheels.

    upload_2020-10-13_8-31-1.jpg

Drop the front diff with some SPC uppers for a 2" lift.

    upload_2020-10-13_8-33-45.jpg

After you finish your build, then go to Silverton, CO for the 100s in the Hills event.
