Hmmm, the V6 has 43% more horsepower, 32% more torque, AND an available manual transmission; while loading and towing may be relatively similar, there will be a huge difference towing a load up an incline. To be sure I'm not saying the I4 engine version of the Tacoma doesn't have a role to fill, but to suggest there "isn't enough of a difference..." is not specifically true.

you clearly missed the point I was making: if a person's needs for a truck is determined by how much it can haul, power output etc then comparing a small truck to another small truck is nto much of a choice. in the real scheme of things the tacoma (either engine) are nothing to compare to say the tundra or f-150s or larger trucks. the squabble between a 4 banger and a small 6banger are both very small in comparison

says the owner of a 4 banger who has owned f-1250 and f150 trucks: tacomas are not truly powerful trucks

see post #22 and related in the scheme of all the trucks- you are too tightly focused on two small trucks compared to ford, Chevy or dodge trucks. hows the horse power diferances between tacomas and those trucks

I'm not confused about anything; I believe you are the one confused; the Tacoma, regardless of engine or trim, does not even remotely attempt to compare itself to a big 3500 pickup much less anything larger; attempting to draw that comparison will fall flat as the next person can then compare your F-1250 to something even larger and more powerful.

Fact is, while the I4 equipped Tacomas may well fulfil the needs of many folks, it falls far short for other folks who will be much better served by a V6 version. I'm sorry if you don't like me blowing up your dismissal of the V6 trucks, but other than the fact the I4 has a really good track record for longevity, they have nothing on the V6 versions.

I have a 17 Tacoma SR with the appearance package (no mustache) I have that 4 banger and love it. It rolled 31K and has performed flawlessly. I secretly wish it had more power but Im fine with what it can do now.
Last year we took it down to Hilton Head from Akron and went thru the mountains just fine. On the trip back I thought we would have to pull over into the slow lane when we climbed Fancy Gap on the Virginia - North Carolina state line but that little motor never gave up and we ran with everyone else during the climb.
I could have spent more and got the V6 and all the other things money can buy but I never needed any of that stuff.
Instead, I picked up all the chrome these guys on Tacoma World were taking off their trucks and dressed up my SR. I even got the Limited fog lights. It looks like an expensive Tacoma but wasn't.
My wife laughs at me when I drive her Sienna and spin the tires giving it gas like I do with the Tacoma. Different animal.

    Check build thread!
Literally factually untrue lol. This tows awesome behind my truck. It is also literally double what the 4 banger is rated for.

exactly the point- thank you for agreeing with me and further showing my point we can not have small debates over a 4 or 6 engine tacoma without a full context of trucks

4 in a row makes them slow. Get the 6 you'll not regret it. These gen3 trucks are too heavy for the 4.

My son and I have been alternating driving his 4cyl and my V6 on our identical 300 mile round trip weekends to the lake. Identical road, same load, same 75 mph speed limit. His 4 cyl is achieving 23 - 26 mpg on this trip. My V6 mpg is less impacted by head / tail wind and is getting a more consistent 18 - 18.5 mpg. The 4 cyl has noticeably less power to quickly achieve 80+ mph for a rapid acceleration pass. However, the 4 cyl definitely achieves better fuel economy.

I’ve owned my 4x4 2.7 since September 2019. Bought it brand new. It now has 50k very hard miles on it. Zero issues (knock on wood). Only gripe I have about the truck is the gear hunting but that’s not a i4 exclusive problem. Mpg varies depending on how I’m driving and what I’m towing. I tow a 6x12 enclosed trailer loaded with lawn equipment, approx 2200 pounds, about 200 miles a week. I’ve towed a XJ Cherokee on a dolly 250 miles , and countless of other things. It gets worked hard, and played harder. Loaded with enclosed and mixed driving is about 14, city driving unloaded about 18, unloaded freeway driving is about 24. I like the fact the engine has a cheaper upfront cost, it’s known, like it’s a undeniable fact of its longevity/reliability, and it has much more work space under the hood to replace things when they fail compared to the v6. It’s no power house, don’t expect it to be. But it has zero issues going 80+ down the road and towing 3k pounds doing 60.

Spin it any way you want, the fact is the 4-cylinder Tacomas are hugely anemic when compared to an otherwise identical V6 powered unit.

I mean my thoughts are that you're not getting a huge mpg boost with I4. But if you're not towing a lot then go for it.

Looking forward to see how well it tows but not optimistic. Just got a 2.7 taco and can’t imagine it lugging much behind. If it will pull 1500 at 65 mph I’ll be pleasantly impressed
