    Update:
    Order has been placed.

I currently have a 2018 DCSB automatic Sport that I am seriously considering trading in and ordering a 2020 Manual DCSB Offroad. I've always bought vehicles off the lot and this would be my first time ordering something not in dealer stock. With that I have questions on the process.

My questions to people with expedience doing this are:
    1. What is the best way to start the conversion with the sales person in regards to ordering? Just walk in and say "I'm interested in possibly ordering something that's not on the lot"?
    2. How much of a discount typically is the dealer willing to give on MSRP for an ordered truck (I know this has too may factors so may be hard to answer)
    3. Are the financial factors taken care of at time of Order? i.e. Final selling price, Trade value, Loan, Cash down

I welcome any other input you may have also.

When I ordered my 2016 Off Road in Oct. 2015 I just went in a set down with the sale person and built the truck I wanted. I turned inHPIM4441.jpg 2011 OFF ROAD in with and Agreed Trade Price and at that time they took $1500 off MSRP. That just my experience. O yea took 3 months for truck to get to dealers Worth the wait.

They're likely gonna do a dealer trade to get the truck you want.

I can't address #2 but when we ordered (dealer trade) the 4R my wife wanted we

#1 called the dealer and said "find us this", then #3 went in when they had located it but before it was shipped and did the papwrwork, down payment, financing. My wife kept her trade in for the week it took to get the truck delivered. She had to transfer ownership of it to the dealer at time of deal and then the dealer essentially "loaned" it to her for that week. When the truck arrived my wife drove the old car in and drove the truck home, 5 minutes, no paperwork.

If you are legit "ordering " and waiting for it to be built then I got nothing for you.

When I was looking for mine, I had colour and features that were not negotiable. Dealer couldn't find one to trade with another dealer anywhere, so it had to be a order from the plant. Around here, there is not much negotiation - the dealers can't barely keep them on the lot as it is. They did give me an incentive on the deal by increasing the value of my trade. In Ontario Canada, $1000 more on the trade is actually worth $1,130 because it's a pre-tax deduction.

    1. Yes. Your dealer can also check on vehicles matching your desires at other dealers. If it is a high volume dealer, they get will get preferential treatment to those coming off the line. Forgot what the term is, there are people here at TW who work in the biz.
    2. It depends on the timing. If your dealer needs some sales they will deal. Don't get emotional, it's just biz. Walk away and come back another day. It might take weeks, months. There are threads on what people paid for their respective trim and year at TW. Use that as a guide for your pain tolerance.
    3. Everything is taken care of during delivery. You should inspect and test drive the vehicle before anything happens. Don't do anything before.

    Hey @jstemp

So I stated my search in early 2018 for my DCSD OR manual. Couldn't find what I wanted for 6+ months. Made an order towards 2018 Q4 and received my vehicle in December 2018.

The main difference: instead of a trade in, I did a private sale for my existing vehicle at the time.

While it might not be complete, here's my response to your questions.

    1. I made a multiple email and phone conversations local dealers in my area (San Diego CA) to see which is the best & fastest way to get my truck with the best price point.
    2. I should've taken more time with each dealer/salesman to provide numbers for a discount, but since its "ordered straight from the factory", there was no discount.
    3. What is taken up front (for me at least) was a $500 deposit on your custom order for your vehicle. Upon arrival, I was able to test drive it. The dealership provided a 1 week period for my choice of purchasing or saying "no". If I recall, the $500 deposit was fully refundable if you didn't purchase. If agreed, then all financial stuff will go as a normal purchase. AKA negotiations. (If you were able to find a vehicle on the floor/lot during the build of your truck, you would be able to get your deposit back)
(I was trying to have a friend order a truck per my build/spec, then say no upon a test drive. At that point, the custom order would be on the floor/lot as every other vehicle. I was hoping to see my "custom order" on the floor so I could potentially negotiate additional discounts as its no longer a custom order. My friend decided to not help.)

I was hasty and should've taken more time. Hope this info helps a bit.

    1) yes. Just tell them what you want and they can either dealer trade or use an upcoming allocation. Some dealers aren’t interested and only want to sell what’s on the lot

    2) depends on the dealer. Some will go msrp, others are willing to discount.

    3) it depends. First truck I ordered we had trade value determined and they ballparked what the new truck would be. I didn’t have to put down a deposit. The second truck I ordered I had to do some paperwork that was basically “intent to purchase” if they could get what I wanted (special config and long lead time)

you’ll have the best luck at a high volume dealer. Cedar Rapids toyota will do it for you if you want to make the trek to Iowa.

First, tell the salesman exactly what you want & what you are trading in. They will look in-house to see what is in stock or go to a locator to do a dealer swap. The likelihood of finding exactly what you want is going to be slim at this point. Toyota is notorious for padding the invoice with add-ons like like mud flaps, door edge guards & other fluffs that they might or might not talk on. See what is available, not wanting mud flaps is a silly reason to not take delivery ASAP.
If you do special order.. Ask if your trade is going to be worth the same today as six weeks from now. Some dealers will deduct time & mileage. Good Luck!

Not sure it was specifically stated. Toyota WILL NOT build a truck to your exact specs. You are only going to get close according to what the dealer can find and deliver. Knowing that, you will have to be a bit flexible.
Other brands will build to your exact order. Toyota won't.

Do not discuss a trade-in until after you have negotiated the price in the new truck.Have their firm price in writing prior to even mentioning a trade-in.

3 inch level/lift, Toyo Open Country R/Ts, and MBRP exhaust.
If you want to get the best DEAL, you will have the most luck negotiating for a truck they have on the lot.
For trading your car in, I recommend going on KBB and getting their Trade-in offer and choose the option to notify local Tacoma dealerships. I did this with my 2018 vehicle and received the best quote for a trade-in from KBB and many dealerships reached out to me to match my offer and some even offered $500 more.
Then what I recommend doing is find the truck you want and tell the dealership that you only want to spend X amount difference OTD. This tactic worked really well for me. I was able to pay a grand below invoice price OTD (roughly 4K less than sticker price) and that was less than a week after the 2020s were delivered. Note, that a decent amount of negotiating was done so if you feel uncomfortable negotiating, you will not get the best deal.

    1. They will try to locate it first within a reasonable distance, both on the lot and on the way to a dealer.
    2. Depends on dealer. I got a pretty good discount on my 2020 ordering from the one I did, but I did put roughly 50 dealers against each other to get the best price.
    3. Usually with an order, they'll probably either do so much off MSRP or if they have an idea of invoice they'll do above, at or below invoice. Usually once it is built and on it's way, you can nail down the final price before TTL. Then do trade value after you got a negotiated price. Then you discuss how you are paying for it. You may not get rates though for Loan/Lease unless you fill out an application.

As long as they can get the right color, trim and non-port/dealer packages it's not hard to get what you want. I had several dealers try to get me to buy an in-route DCLB OR Voodoo blue with Tech+Premium but I wanted Adv Tech and said no dice, order it. One is ordering it, I assume a few of the items will be dealer installed, not factory. I'm still waiting on a build date for mine.

I think it's more accepted when you're trying to order a manual because there isn't usually as much stock if any on hand. I would try email a few dealerships and see what setup they have in place. You can't be the first person locally to try this.

They will build it to your specs based on valid configurations. I've done it twice.

Double Cab Long Beds do not exist with a manual transmission in any trim. Unless you're talking about auto then you have a chance.
