I have been considering a 4Runner for some time. I have a low mileage 2001 Tacoma single cab 2.7L manual that I bought new and love. The issue is I can only take one person with me now. I have a wife and 2 kids and it would be nice to take all 4 off us out when a 4 wheel drive is required. I take a trip at least once a year with my boy, and a friend and his boy (I think his 4runner is a 4th gen). We do things like the Washington or Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route. I was looking for a 4Runner with a rear locker, but I have an opportunity to purchase a stock 2016 SR5 with 3rd row with less than 20,000 miles for $25,000. It seems like a reasonable deal. I know I would like the locker, sunroof, electric/heated seats, (KDSS maybe?), etc. My issue is if this is a good enough deal to make me forego the other options and just get the SR5? I do not buy vehicles often, and keep them until they are worn out. I will likely sell the 2001 Tacoma and keep our 2014 XLE AWD Sienna and 2015 RAV4 XLE.

I wouldn't sell your little truck, but I'd like to hear what others think as I'm looking around at used Runners as well and wonder about SR5 vs Off Roads, etc. too

My recommendation (especially considering you keep your vehicles long term) is to wait and get the model with the features that you want. If you want a sunroof, rear locker, heated seats, KDSS, then get an OR model with those options. Seems like you already have a van so the 3rd row option isn't necessary and would just add weight and take up cargo space so I would forego that.

Any update OP? That’s a killer deal in my opinion. Most people for the specs you listed would be asking close to 30k, especially in Oregon. I would jump on that, but that is just my opinion.

X2. That’s a SMOKING deal. I’ve found 4runners 2016+ often go for even more than Tacos go for with comparable mileage

Get the 4runner but keep the little Tacoma for your son to drive one day

I have been in Israel for 2 weeks traveling. I had time to think about the 4runner while out one day in a Landcruiser above the Dead Sea. Took the 4runner out today with my wife and kids. The wife and kids love it. My wife is very nice and suggested we sell the Rav4 because she says I like my Tacoma (still have not decided if we will sell any vehicle). We are going to buy the 4runner. The 4runner also comes with an extended warranty that was previously purchased which is nice (I believe it is a 10 year extended warranty).

That’s steal price, in California it will cost 30k. So I end up lease a Tacoma.

I think you made a great decision. But, I am a bit biased as I an on my fourth 4Runner and have enjoyed every on of them. I never had a problem with any of them.

Some background. A year ago the owner (90 years old) put diesel in it. It immediately quit running and was towed home. It sat for about a year until he recently passed away. Toyota drained the tank and etc. (I have not read what they have done to it, but plan too).

I was driving the 4runner prior to purchasing it when the check engine and trac off lights came on. It has been getting only between 10.5 – 13.5 MPG. It is going to be taken back to Toyota to have them look at it again. I think the injectors are probably clogged if they were not cleaned or changed. The rest of the fuel system likely is clogged just from the diesel sitting in there for a year.

The sellers and I are all friends so I am able to drive it and check it out and decide if I want to buy it. There is no pressure from either one of us. I am still on the fence at this point. Anyone have experience with a vehicle that had diesel in it?

Driving my wife’s 2019 from Portland to Buffalo NY right now. I love the 4runner more then my Tacoma. The Tacoma is just more practical for me cause of my hobbies. Hope it all works out and they can fix everything.

I took the 4Runner to a Parts Store and had them run a diagnostic on it to see what was causing the CEL. It came back that both of the O2 sensors need to be replaced. The 4Runner is going into the shop on Monday to have the recalled airbag replaced. The O2 sensors will be replaced at that time. Hopefully that is all folks!

The 4runner went in to the dealer to have the airbag recall performed and to check on the dash lights. The verdict, according to Toyota, is that all 4 O2 sensors and Cats need to be replaced at just under $8000 out the door. I will not be buying this 4runner.

Go for it. The ATrac is functional enough to go anywhere that will scare the s.h.i.t out and of you, you won’t miss a locker. A 4 Runner is too nice to ever have to use one. Excellent mileage for that year.

I purchased the 4runner. I have Husky mats and pedal commander ordered. I plan on getting front windows tinted to match. I need some roof cross bars. I already have a wilco offroad hitchgate offset spare tire carrier to put on it. I am going to have Katzkin leather heated seats done. The first trip we are planning is going to Prudhoe Bay with the family this summer. My parents are also going in their truck.

Good first purchase of Husky mats. Great product. 4 runners are great cars......now if they made them more fuel efficient, they’d be perfect.
    Great zombi apocalypse truck.

4 Runners are the off spring of the mating of a Tacoma and a Venza. They’re better then both.

Good choice Ravs are solid, but wearing and tiresome.
