    Hi All,

I have a 2007 DC Taco SR5 package (Canada). This truck came with front airbags ... end of story.

In comparison, the 2017 has front air bags, seat-mounted airbags, knee airbags and side curtain airbags.

The 2017 is obviously safer to drive if hit on the side or if rolling.

So ... should I replace my 2nd generation tacoma with a 3rd generation 2017 Taco to get the improved safety features?

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

It depends on how many miles you drive. I put on about 30K miles a year, so I wanted a nice, safe truck and got rid of my old death-trap Civic when I was relocated with the long commute. If you only drive a few miles a day, statistically, you are much less likely to get in an accident.

not really a question anyone but you can answer...if you drive 3500 miles a year by yourself, live alone, no other people or family depending on your income....do you really need it? Maybe not...

how about this...Can you afford to move up in truck? if you can afford it...why not?

The new tacomas been having plenty of their own safety issues (recalls). Do you just want a new truck? Are you seeking validation to buy one?

I've seen quite a few threads on here from guys who have been in some bad accidents and walk away and they credit that to the new Tacoma with all of its safety features. All new vehicles are safer now than they were 10 years ago for sure.

The 2018's are adding a bunch of safety features. Maybe wait and buy one with the extra features.

LOL.."plenty" of safety issues. Oh brother. Another thread hijacked.
For me (and anyone I have in the car), I prefer as many of the latest safety goodies that my budget allows. No doubt additional airbags and other structural improvements do, in fact, make the 3rd Gen safer. If you can afford it and you want it and you want the safer of the two choices, then buy it. If you answer no to any of those 3 punch items, then skip it. The 2018's by the way are due for a few more safety features standard, if you care. Regardless, 2007 or 2017 or 2018...you likely gonna be OK.

Over a quarter million recalled for safety issues. Not a hijack at all just the facts.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Yes, I can afford to move up. I'm just thinking out loud ... trying to justify the move. My 2nd generation Tacoma still runs amazingly well. I wouldn't mind a safer ride though, especially when my wife is riding shotgun. I'll watch for more comments.

Which safety features are being added in 2018?

Seatbelts... I drove for about 20 years before cars had an air bag. Fire/rescue people will usually say that the seat belt is the main device that saves lives.

Now... If you are using this as a supporting item to get the "other half" on board, then yes, by all means.

Isn't it just the rear end and transmission? A little over dramatic? Nothing is really perfect, I may be wrong though.

There have been several recalls on the "new" tacoma...usually a recall is safety related. The largest and most recent two recalls involved over 260,000+ third gens.

Have you done the same search on second gens? I did. And there were more recalls. :)

Holy sheet Batman... the 17's come with "seat-mounted airbags" I think that's a real improvement if you have the sunroof and don't like wearing a seat belt....
A seat-mounted air bag could eject you out of the sunroof before anything bad happens...!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
    Great idea...:D:D
