Considering trading 2010 Tundra for 2017 Tacoma

I can speak for a couple of toy engines. The 4.0 and 5.7 The 4.0 in the 06 Tundra 2 door, pulled my boat down the road ok as long as it was flat and wasn't pushing a wind. Out of OD was typically the best way to go, otherwise it was in and out of OD. If flat powered out climbing Kansas hills on I70. I'd drop from 75 to 65. The 5.7 4x4 4 door, I can pass other people on that same hill pulling the boat. I've never powered it out. Same boat on the 93 Dakota RWD 2 door long bed 318, powered out on the hill. Same situation with F150, 300, 6, 5 spd, 2 door, RWD, powered out quicker than the 4.0 and 318. The Tundra is extremely impressive on a pull.

 

No delay on the Taco.

They do, it's called a Tundra. Buy the right tool / truck for the right job. You never see the advertisements glorify a Tacoma's towing capacity, only it's offroad capabilities and resale. Why do you think that is?

How much bigger can they make the Tacoma and keep that little under powered 3.5 gas guzzler lugging around that heavy oversized body.

I have two issues with my 2016 Tacoma - the transmission and the ride quality. I came from a 2010 4Runner, and the transmission in my Tacoma is just something that I can't really get used to, even after having owned it for over a year now. The engine has plenty of power, and it seems to be extremely comfortable at higher RPM's than the 4.0 liter that was in my 4Runner, but the transmission saps all the low end torque. I'm sure it's been discussed/complained about on this forum extensively. The ride quality is also terrible. I know, "but it's a truck!", but my 1997 Chevrolet S-10 had a better ride than this thing.

Would I buy a Tacoma again? No. I should have gone with a Tundra, or another 4Runner. I've told my friends who own those vehicles, hurry up and buy another new if you hear Toyota is going to redo the gearboxes of either. The 4Runner community is going to howl if they put the Tacoma's 6 speed auto in it. If you're one of those people who has been able to get used to or even love your new Tacoma, then I'm genuinely happy for you and even a bit jealous. Maybe I wouldn't be having this acceptance issue if I hadn't come from the far superior 4Runner. It matters not. There's no going back for me at this point, and I anticipate I'll probably be getting a new truck right around my Tacoma's 2 year anniversary.

 

You need more power buy a Tundra or else buy a smaller (older) truck. If Toyota wants to sell both models they will continue to make the line between Tacoma and Tundra more distinct.

 

I just test drove a 2015 4x4 sr5 with 16k. Very nice truck. I'm waiting for the trade in numbers.

 

What do they want for the SR5, 33k ?

 

I would not recommend trading down yet, I think you will miss the power of the V8. I am definitely missing the power from my Chevy Silverado! If they could supercharge these motors I am ready to give them my money!

 

I have a 17 DCLB sport and honestly there haven't been any problems with it. I did get stuff like the diff recall and transmission fluid checked cause honestly who wouldn't get it done if it'll be covered by warranty. But yeah for my first truck its great, obviously mileage is gonna vary, I'm pretty hard on the gas around town and get 16-17 mpg without my air dam on(it was basically the same with that shit on) and pretty easy to drive around town. I have 7000 miles on it so far and I would recommend it regardless of what the consumer reports say. But I also test drove a tundra and it has more power and the engine and transmission paired in that works a hell of a lot better. It would be easy to upgrade to a bigger truck but much harder to downgrade to a midsize one.

I love Tundra's but can't stand piston slap, my 4.0L Tacoma sounded awful until it was at full operating temp, Below 5*C it was really irritating. That and the frame rot were the main reasons I got rid of it and haven't considered another Tacoma.

That all said I tried a few things to quiet the piston slap, 10w30 synthetic helped.

True I'm still figuring out why they take so long to decide on a place to eat
