I bought this vault at costco online on 1-2-09 for $250 and they are crediting me back the $50 due to the lowered price. Great customer service!:)

By the way, in Texas, if a building has the official 30.06 sign posted prohibiting handguns, you need to have a secure place to store it if you need to enter that building. This vault gives me a greater piece of mind.

Any LEO's here? If so I'd like to ge your take on this.

If a guy carries a gun in a locked compartment (safe) wouldn't the Police need a search warrent to "open" your gun safe.

I'm not an expert on gun laws but it's my understanding that even with probable cause they can search your vehicle but would need a search warrent to legally access any locked containers.

Out here in Wyoming probably 1/2 of all motor vehicles on the road are packing, even more so away from any large cities.

Just for anybody else who purchased one... I purchased mine on the same day as nd. When I tried to get a partial refund I received this response:

"Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale.

Regarding your request to receive a credit for a recent price drop on an item you purchased. We honor price drops on items within 30 days from the time of purchase, and it has been more than 30 days in your case. Because of this, we are unable to credit you the difference. We apologize for any nconveniences this may cause. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you,

    Shawn
    Costco Wholesale Corporation"
Seems they're a little hit and miss. Oh well...

I would hope that they would be consistent! This the email that they sent me.

    Dear John,

Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale.

Oh, thank you. I have found it. I will request the $50.00 credit be applied back to your credit card you used for your order.
Watch for an e-mail alert within the next 7-10 business days. Thank you John!

    Thank you,

    Tami

Well hopefully you get the refund... It'd be a shame if Tami just didn't know what she was doing and will have to come back later and say that she was wrong about being able to get it to you. Good luck!

I bought one of these from the website. Key lock style.

I wanted something like this to store my GPS and Satellite radio, etc. instead of taking them out of the truck or putting them under the seat. For while I was putting the in back of the truck since I have a Roll-n-lock cover but this is much easier and gives me some piece of mind.

Good product. Fits good. Easy install.

Hey guys, for those of you looking for an alternative, you might want one of these Not necessarily as secure (unless you get creative), but it's $30. If you use the cable, you can potentially put it in different vehicles, your hotel, etc.

I like the idea, and it's good for a gun case, but I wanted my vault for a number of other things. That's a great (and much less expensive) alternative for somebody who just wants to secure their gun, though.

Yeah it varies state by state. If you have a concealed carry permit for your state, you can carry it loaded in the car. Many states' concealed carry permits are valid in other states (e.g. Utah's permit is valid in about 30+ states). However, California doesn't recognize any other state's concealed carry permit. You can get concealed carry permits in California but it depends on the local sheriff for your county. In San Diego county, it's almost impossible to get one. Some counties are "Shall issue" and some are "May issue". If it's "shall issue" the sheriff will issue a permit unless there is some circumstance that legally prevents him/her from doing so (e.g. convicted felon). San Diego is "May Issue" which means it's totally arbitrary depending on how the sheriff dictates (usually reserved for large campaign contributors or friends of the sheriff).

Despite that, you can still carry a gun in your car if you follow the procedures. It has to be in a locked case and the ammunition has to be seperate from the gun. I have a gun case that has a center area for ammunition and two side pockets that I keep the guns in with a lock on the zippers for each side. It's a grey area as to whether or not a loaded clip is considered part of the gun so it's best to carry the ammunition outside of the clip. Probably the best option for carrying in a car in California would be a revolver with ready speed loaders (seperated of course).

I've even heard of some doing open carry of an unloaded weapon in public: holstered and visible but not loaded (e.g. an unloaded revolver with speed loaders carried elsewhere on a belt). Technically, it's legal though it may garner law enforcement attention. You also have to make sure that no part of it is covered (e.g. by your shirt) otherwise it's considered concealed.

You also have to be careful about carrying near a school (you cannot carry within 500 feet I believe).

OK, this makes me think that if someone encounters this they will really think there's somethin important in there so just kick & break the whole console loose & take the whole damn thing & find out what's inside later. Yeah, I know it'd be retarded to be walkin down the street with a whole console like nobody will notice but consider the absolute braindead dipshittery that takes place nowadays. If dumbass thieves really thought about shit they'd have jobs right? Does it bolt thru the console to the body? If not then MIA console could come your way.

But a crow bar can get anything out if you have the time. For me, I carry my weapon. I just have it in the vault for those short whiles when I am in a location where they are not allowed.

Yes, it bolts to the frame of the truck. Otherwise it'd be an awfully silly thing to install, I agree. Also, you have to remove the flip-up lid to the console to install it, so it's in there pretty well.

My theory (and I posted this somewhere... maybe this thread, maybe elsewhere) is that a determined thief is going to get whatever he wants. The vault is going to keep a smash-and-grab guy from getting my stuff, and will keep the dishonest auto mechanic or valet guy from stuffing something in his pocket.

Maybe some day I will walk out to my truck and find that some jerkwad decided he was going to get my vault no matter what and destroyed the console in the process. I just don't see that happening. Either the guy will take the whole truck or he'll move on to the next vehicle leaving me with just a broken window.

Of course, he could be like this ass hat and destroy as much as he could b/c he was pissed that he couldn't get in the vault.

The costco one bolts to the body. The one I suggested has pre-drilled holes, or you can use the supplied cable.

If there's something that is worth any sort of money, it can be stolen, no matter the security. All you can do is lessen the chance by making things harder.

If you have a gun in a vehicle, you are responsible for the theft and can be convicted because you did not properly secure the firearm. If the weapon is later used in a murder, etc, you can be charged with assisting the criminal. To paraphrase, by having the vault, you can't be responsible if someone steals your gun from your vehicle.

Gun laws are very specific state-to-state. Before taking anything for granted, it's best to do research. In Oregon, it used to be something like 1,000 feet; but someone brought up the point that they lived next door to a school and could be arrested for concealing in their backyard. I'm not sure what the result of the case was. Also note that colleges such as Oregon State University will attempt to say that it is illegal to carry concealed on their campus - this is false, as federal law permits this and supersedes the college's jurisdiction.
This just gives you an idea of how you need to be educated as to what your rights are when it comes to actively carrying.
